Thread: What was your first motorbike ?

  1. #1

What was your first motorbike ?

We have had cars so how about motorbikes ?

Mine was a 197cc Francis (Fanny) Barnett two stroke back in 1964, I had saved up the princely sum of £7-10s and one Saturday I toured the second hand bike shops in Leicester (we had a few) and while looking in one shop a bloke came out that I knew, he asked what I was up to and I told him I was looking for a bike, he said he had just sold his Fanny Barnett to the shop for £3, he said he would get it back, drop it off at my house for a total of £3.10s, deal done.

I had a few bikes over the years and the Fanny was the last to leave, just so reliable and easy to work on, I remember in the winter I could leave it propped up against the garage and in the morning it could be buried in snow, shake the snow off a couple of kicks (kick start) and away it would go.

The one and only vehicle I bought new - pictured in the far ground - moved onto my younger brother when I bought the 250x(foreground)
Iíve owned dozens over the years and have recently returned to 2 (motorised) wheels after a 10 year hiatus

Mine was a 650 BSA GOLD FLASH about 1964/5. I passed my test on a mates bike then a few weeks later my Mum & Dad took me the 120 miles from Hereford to Pride & Clark in London. We did all the paperwork and then I rode the bike home.

1965 Vespa Sportique 150cc bought in 1966, I can even remember the reg HPL797C.

I purchased it from The Two Wheel Happening in Woking, kept it for a year or so then after being turfed into a ditch by a couple of greasers I saw the light and traded it in for an H reg CB 250cc Blue and White Honda from Comerfords in Thames Ditton.

Happy Days, not been without a 2 wheeler in the garage since.

Honda C50L in 1981 then on to a Honda H100S, still got a Honda in the garage 40 years later, a Hornet 600

The very rare (made for farmers) Honda CT125.

My first bike was a Honda SS 125 from the late 60's. Bought it about 1975. Only kept it for about a year and then got a Yamaha YL1 100cc two stroke twin. Faster acceleration and more exciting sound on full tap :-)

    Only ever had 2 bikes.
First was a Suzuki GS850 Custom - I think that was the model.
Second was a Kawasaki GPZ750 in red. That thing was fast.
Keep thinking about getting a bike now - itís only been about 25 years since I sold the Kawasaki.

My first bike was a 1964 Honda c110 50cc Sport bought for £25 back in 1971. It had a very nice reg no 1486KP as Kent did not adopt the new lettering system until 1965 when "C" came along.
I am currently on the lookout for another one!

My one and only bike was a Suzuki GP100, on a Ví plate. I was the 2nd owner and paid £120 which was lent to me by my dad and paid back at £5 a week. I loved that bike as it gave me my first taste of freedom even though I did break the law once or twice giving my mates backies to and from the local pubs.
Wonderful days when life was so much more care free.

My first bike was an ex police R45 which was sprayed gold, panniers the lot. Not as bad as it sounds as it was professionally done.

    No pics Iím afraid.

Puch MS50V , bought brand new in the 70ís for £70. Did 7000 miles in 12 months! Brilliant little bike and I still look on the bay at them. Built by Steyr Daimler Puch.

Seized it doing 42 mph down a steep hill, only ever did 35 after that so flogged on my 17th birthday for a Honda175 :)

Did the intensive licence and bought a new Triumph Street Triple, did about 700 miles over the next month before deciding that box was ticked - thus ended my brief mid-life crisis.

MZ Ts 125 in the fetching pea green colour! I remember taking the carb apart as the 16 year old me thought he knew what he was doing. Turns out I didn't so it was hastily reassembled before my Dad found out, lol!

Iíve owned 3 Ďbikesí and a fallen off all of them
First was a hideous Suzuki OR50 in black. A 50cc Ďchopperí styled piece of awfulness. I scratched a wolfs head into the fuel tank because I was that kind of rebellious bad boy. Fell off it larking about at the local allotments in the mud.
Next was a Kawasaki AR80 I bought from a mate, part of the transaction involved a Commodore 64 4 colour printer/ plotter.
This I fell off when the chain slipped the ruined rear cog and jammed the back wheel. Once that was sorted it was a lovely bike until I totalled it by being blinded by an oncoming car and putting it in a ditch.
My final bike was a white Yamaha RD125LC with derestricted exhaust and air horns. I aquaplaned this one but it lived through that. Then some joker at collage put a hole in the oil tank for a giggle and the piston blew. It was never the same after that and it was sold for driving lessons and my first car.

Do you realise your RD125 and the Ar80 would realise £2.5 to £3.5k each today. Its even worse than selling a Kermit for £2k 10 years ago :):)

Sorry forget the 125 price I was 2.5k out

Lambretta 100 Cento in 1973 at the ripe old age of 13. A freebie from a neighbour, and something to ride around the fields. Next was an NSU Quickly which caught fire one day on starting it up. I threw a plastic anorak over it in an attempt to douse the flames, and the outcome was better than expected!

Not totally original? What was modified, and what did you get done in your ownership? That is an iconic bike for sure!

Seat, bars, exhaust, wheels? Rear brake?
