Im feeling a bit Tunad out this week - so back to an old favourite, my worn but much beloved 1970 Speedy. I really ought to get the Polywatch out again!

Have a great weekend everyone, and happy Diwali to those that celebrate.

Took this out of my box the other day only to find that it had stopped - no digital display. So I fitted a new battery and it still wasn't working. Checked the new battery, 1.6V, so OK. Checked the old battery, 1.6V so OK too; ok, watch is buggered! But then I noticed a small piece of loose metal floating about, odd, the watch hadn't been out of the box for quite a few weeks. Also there didn't appear to be a contact for the underside, (+), of the battery, only the shiny silver back of the dial which, on inspection, was recessed so wouldn't contact the battery anyway; ah, methinks, that must be what the loose piece of metal is - a pip on one end and a rather odd hook shape at the other, no sign of it having snapped off anywhere. Two choices, throw it away or open it up and see if I can solder it back in place. Nothing to lose I chose the latter....

Several screws and clips removed and I was able to lift the circuit board out to find there was no where on it that the batteries positive contact, (aka loose bit of metal), could fit. However, there was a recess in the plastic movement holder where the contact looked like it would go. Quite a tight fit, but into place it goes and it's clear that this is indeed where it fits as the pip on the contact lines up centrally in the battery compartment. Looking at the underside of the circuit board there is a part of the printed circuit above the very area that, when refitted, would make contact with the terminal. What an odd way to connect the battery, relying on what can only be described as a friction fit!

Refitted the circuit board, popped the original battery back in and the watch immediately sprang back into life. Set the digital time and adjusted the hands to match and it's worked perfectly since.

The only puzzling thing now is, how on earth did the battery terminal detach itself whilst the watch was sat in my watch box?

    HAGWE.
    Best Regards - Peter

This one today. While I like having a date on my watches, its such a hassle to cycle through the dates with a GMT watch. Anyway, have a great weekend.

This little thing will be in the rotation for the next few weeks.

I think I need to give the dial a bit of a dust.

    Enjoy your weekend.

What a fine example of its type. Is it a mark V maxi dial, early 80s?

It's a Mk IV from 1981, and thank you very much! (Aside from the serial range being a pointer it’s recognisable by the sans serif font, the size and position of the plots and the relative positioning of the bottom text - and specifically the “=” symbol)

My grandfather gave me a gold (plated of course) version of this watch, or something very near it.

Ahh yes. It seems the discernible differences from my mk V appear to be: that your SUBMARINER text is shorter/narrower than the text of the depth rating; and the = sign is slightly to the right under the A rather than directly below the middle of the A. Plus the zigzag S.

Whatever, its a lovely looking watch and looks to be in great nick with nice unpolished lugs.

Thanks banie01, didn't realise it could be that old. I picked it up at a Car Boot sale back in 2008 and it's in really good condition - keeps good time and all the functions work too.

Apart from trying on a few watches after strap changes and wearing a dress watch to a black tie event this is the only thing that has been on my wrist for weeks. Maybe the only thing I need. I am considering sending it for a service which will precipitate a change.
