Triumph 1500TC - P 'Reg' in Pimento (red!)
Had been my dad's car, but when my great uncle died, my great aunt more or less gave my dad his Marina (My dad didn't really want it, but kind of felt obliged...), so he let me buy his Triumph cheaply.
It was a great little car, I sometimes look at Dolomite Sprints and think they'd make an enjoyable little classic, but I guess it's a bit like sex with an old girlfriend, the memory is probably better than the reality would be

1986 Ford Fiesta 1.0 Popular Plus back in '98.
4-speed on the floor.
Starter motor solenoid went so used to park it on hills when alone so I could bump it in either forward or reverse.
Think the solenoid cost £25 to fix but I was too tight, as hills abound in Sheffield.
1973 mk.1 Ford Escort 1300L four door.
One of those
Original 1600 engine before they upped it to 1800
Was my uncles car and I had coveted it for years
Passed my test and bought it from him-think I was 23 so not a teenager
Stuck an alpine stereo in it and felt like the man.
1972 MG Midget round wheel arch. A steep mechanical learning curve.
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
Late '68 Morris Minor in Almond Green.
It was my grandmothers, she stopped driving some months before I passed my test.
It was 4 months older than me, and she had bought it new, for about £550, she and her sister bought idenical ones, with adjacent number plates. We had the original receipt.
Unfortunately, a couple of years later the car was stolen by some scrote from Hartcliffe to drive home late one night, they left it burning in a field nearby when they got there.
RIP the Flying DishCover.
Ford Anglia 105 E 997 cc engine.
In 1974, an A plate Vauxhall Viva HA square box thing dark green but i sprayed the bonnet Matt black and it had wheel spacers cause I couldn’t afford wider wheels.

First car was a 'C' reg Peugeot 205 1.9 diesel..bought in 1994 for £300..cost another £300 to limp it through its MOT...it was a very poorly looking drab yellow colour and thanks to the red hammerite I used to cover the rust was nicknamed the flying phlegm....met an untimely death on the A1 a year later when the fuel pump exploded on my way to Newcastle airport for a lads holiday...bah !....next car was a mates Nova GTE...with obligatory chemical brother CD and fag burns in the tartan upholstery..loved it
My first car was a 1968 Daimler V8 250 with factory fitted manual overdrive gearbox (only 700 left the factory as manual overdrive versions).
As a fresh faced 17 year old I paid £500 for the car and £400 to insure it! I was always getting pulled by the police in that one, can't think why!
DKD 915X A silver Triumph Acclaim HLS, 1.3 Honda engine.
Paid £1800 for it then added the obligatory Blaupunkt digital stereo with front & rear speakers at £600, only to have them stolen 3 months later.

A Fiat 126. Still the most fun car I've ever had. A red one, of course.
There are some very impressive first cars on this thread.
Presumably if we are now thinking of what car our own children could drive, is the selection just going to be one litre runabouts or would the insurance on a classic be possible without going into four figures? That might be more than the replacement cost of the car itself.
My first car was a Wolseley ..it was either an 1100 or a 1300.......I cant remember which!
It cost me £110..it was in 1980 when I was working in Jersey. It was an automatic..I remembere the colour of it too! According to the log book it was Glen Green.
Me too!
£1000 for this mk 1 Cavalier. Orange with tan vinyl roof and matching plastic interior! Rear wheel drive so lots of fun in the snow and some exciting times on Autumn slippy roads. Took me and pals on many trips to the Lakes and Scarborough. I seem to recall the insurance was remarkably cheap for a first car.

Oh, were the Mark 1s RWD?
That is interesting. I know the Mark 2 Escorts were as well. I was always slightly disappointed that the Mark 3s were FWD. It's relative though as I counted myself very lucky to have a car at all.
Passed my test in 1975 at the tender age of 17, bought a 1967 mk1 Mini 850 a couple of weeks later. Apart from the fact that it was slow, noisy and uncomfortable it was OK but I don't look back on it fondly, I didn’t like it and sold it after a year to buy a Hillman Avenger........luxury and refinement after the Mini!
My first I got in 1996 was an 1983 Opel Corsa 1.3 TR, trim line "Luxus". It was silver, it had funky looking orange interior and way too large 15" 175 wide tires. Later when changing the tires I noticed the the inner tire wall scraped the inside fenders.
The insurance was not too bad, and they surely regretted that as I got into an accident the first year I had the car. I stopped for a red light with a few cars in front of me, and the a beatiful girl a nice 205GTI stops next to me, but she inched just a bit forward so... when the light turned green, I just had to get a look. Naturally the cars in front of me were turning and stopped for pedestrians, so I did see the beauty again and less than a second later I hit the rear of the car in front of me. I learnt something, maybe.
The same summer when the accident took place I had a summer job in Germany. The crash had to be fixed, and it was kind of lucky that the crash took place because the front beam had been snapped before in a crash and only spot welded later! We got this fixed before I left from Germany, driving the car through Sweden. I will also never forget the trip back. I had to leave Hannover very early in the morning to catch the Finland ferry in Stockholm late the same night, after more than 1000km of driving. It was a beatiful July day, sun shining brightly. Pretty soon after I departed I noticed that the air vents did not give any air, the motor was broken. I was going at motorway speeds, so no way driving the windows open. It must have been 40-50 degrees all day in the car, and a shower never felt better than after that drive.
Learned to drive on Mum's chocolate brown Allegro 1500
My first own car was this, in this colour:
Racing from light to light through London to the Lord Mayor show my mate wrote it off by running up the back of it - instant hatchback!

A 1970 Hillman Imp…. Great little car once I’d sorted the cooling.👍
I bought this MG Midget 1500 off my father-in-law to be over 30 years ago. Sadly no longer have the car but still with Mrs Yumma.
1.3 Fiesta Ghia in metallic baby blue, with rev counter & central console! Wanted an XR2 but insurance was daft enough on this one.
Spent ages with wax & back to black on the faded external plastics.
Used to love it, but rusted underneath despite bodywork being perfect. A385 MKL rest in peace.

My second car was one of those (Vauxhall Cavalier Coupe - In Sapphire Blue, I think they called that, with a big Webasto sunroof, in my case)
Looked good, great handling, fantastic ride, engine made of chocolate...
Oddly mine suffered the same boot shortening write-off fate, but I took the insurance money and carried on running it for a while until I replaced it with a Renault 5 GT Turbo.

Vauxhall HB Viva. 13 years old when I got it with completely dull paintwork.
Reliable, but slow & handled like shite. Caught fire.
Andy
Wanted - Damasko DC57
Triumph Dolomite 1300HL. I have no photos of it but can paint a picture for you. It was sh1t brown, with a (slightly lighter) sh1t brown vinyl interior, with the occasional bit of sh1t brown wood dashboard, just to finish off the sh1t brown theme.
Other than being really slow, hugely sticky to sit in and ever so slightly embarrassing for a 18 year old, it was ok(ish). However, my abiding memory, other than the overall sh1tiness, was that I discovered oversteer in it. My girlfriend at the time was so impressed by my new found skills that she promptly ditched me, after I (accidentally) displayed these skills late at night, on one of the twisty valley roads. Shame, I remember quite liking her but I think the oversteer thing has served me better long term.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
MK2 8v Golf GTI, I bought it modified with big bumper, smooth tailgate etc… It was definitely a mistake but I loved it. Lasted 3 months until I got rid for a Corrado.
Cheers

Some great cars in this thread, although they rusted like fcuk they had soul. Unlike today's badge-engineered-designed in a wind tunnel-technology filled offerings.
My first was a Cortina Mk. V followed by the Opel badged version of this i.e. a Manta

I loved that car. Bought with an insurance pay out from an accident, and lost in another accident - but due to other drivers incompetence :(
It's just a matter of time...

Always the cat I wish my parents had. Their first cool car was a Calibra in the launch month, remember seeing the looks being picked up from school in that.
After all my dads sierras & cavaliers plus prior generations, he finally found a car he loved on the car scheme
Datsun Cherry 100A in orange. Many adventures in that car!
Peugeot 106 New Wave. It was a special edition as was the trend back in the 90’s. All they did was put a rear window wiper on it and a fancy sticker. Loved it back then but wouldn’t want to drive that anymore these days. Put a lot of polish though on that car. Fun times. Ended with a truck reversing on it.
