    Strange going on

I have vertical blinds in my home office. The cord weight is swinging gently from side to side. There's no draught, and the slats are perfectly still. What could be causing this?

    (a) A tiny breeze that is not detectable by your skin.
    (b) Small ground vibrations. This could be anything from traffic, to furniture being moved somewhere, to a distant heavy train, to the more exciting low level seismicity. The weight acts like a pendulum and effectively amplifies any incoming vibrations.

    Or a poltergeist.

    Convection.

Is there a rad or a heater below it?

It's not draught or air movement. The vertical slats are completely still, and I have just stuck a post-it note to the wall next to the weight. Again, zero movement.

    I haven't checked, but I don't think there's a T-Rex approaching.

The vibration thing can be difficult to detect. You can't normally feel tiny vibrations that can cause a well-balanced object to start moving in response.

Try laying flat on your floor. Or lay on a sofa directly place on the floor. Vibrations that are totally unnoticeable normally then become apparent.

No, really. I'm serious! I'm not just trying to make you go and lay on your floor. :-)

    Having a busy Friday?

Those sort of things wind (no pun) me up, especially as it would not have been doing it previously.

Easiest solution is to open the window so everything blows about.

Just out of interest, if you touch it when it is completely still how long does it take for the oscillations to subside?

    About 10 minutes.

Previously while it was doing it 'autonomously', I did try damping it, but it carried on.

I was going to post that clip! Couldn't find the one I wanted (where they talk about being stuck behind aliens at the cinema).

    Hmm.

    That's significant movement.

Did you try shortening (or lengthening) it by a bit to adjust its natural frequency ?

The 10 minute movement from being touched does suggest to me that it is very sensitive to the tiniest impetus.

Interesting about the movement continuing with damping. That might suggest that the cause of the movement is near-constant.

    I still say micro-vibrations. ;-)

It's the house moving not the cord.

The big question is, do you have warranty on that so you can moan at the company who made it and get an engineer out to have a look.

Do the blinds move if rotated 90 degrees to open? At present you are comparing one thing moving which has a dominant plane at 90 degrees to the other items. Or in layman's language if there was a convection draft parallel to the window, it hits the wider plane of the cord weight but the minor plane (edge) of blinds which will create insufficient resistance to move the blind.

Is a convection draft something that could be created by the emission of noxious gas - for example, from a digestive system?

Temperature difference between the room and the glass side of the blinds.

    I believe so.

I think we need to discount some external sources of such activity, such as pets.

This is important. For example, the BBC has posted a number of serious documentaries on this very subject.

I had another look at the video.

Rather than it being something that is occurring every minute or so and then momentum continuing to move it, it actually looks as if it is constantly being moved. It reminds me of when you see some footage of something onboard a ship - there is a constant force acting on it.

    In my amateur opinion.

Deffo not a T-Rex, a quick google search will reveal they actually became extinct a few years back.

No, the most likely cause is a herd of Slow Worms in the footings of the building having a house party. Or maybe even a Slow Worm egg lodged inside the pull cord holder about to hatch. Worth a check dont you think ?
