    Great Steak in London

Prompted by Beanie's "Steak with a view" thread, I've actually been meaning to ask you lot this for ages and keep forgetting.

Next time I'm in London I want to get a proper steak. Not a high-end / posh restaurant, rather a place that is all about the meat like Casa Julian which is on my bucket list of places to eat:

    https://casajulianmg.com/

I remember years ago Gordon Ramsey recommending an Argentinian place in London that he claimed was amazing - http://www.santamariadelsur.com/ - anyone been?

    Where would you recommend?

    Thanks.

I'm down South in a couple of weeks to see Hamilton at the theatre. I'm looking at STK steakhouse for a decent feed, looks very much like the Gaucho style places (I've done Gaucho in Manchester so really didn't want to book there, not very imaginative!).

Anyway, this STK do a 900 gram Tomahawk steak which has caught my eye (calm down you lot, half of that will be the bone). I'll report back.

A friend of mine raves about a place called “Il Macellaio”, and promised to go there next time am in London. They have three or four in London, he goes to the one in Soho.

Macellaio means “butcher”, and they use “Fassona”, i.e. one of the two Italian indigenous meat-bovines, the other being the Chianina.

I am sure there are lots of smaller independent steak houses in London which are great. But my go to for a “small chain” is Hawksmoor. Love their steak.

I like Rowleys on Jermyn Street. Been going there for years. Excellent chateaubriand.

It is indeed ''amazing'', my BIL lives within 500 mtrs and we've eaten there a few times, I've yet to taste better.

This thread is a goldmine on this topic and many of the recommendations are in London:

Goodman is brilliant. Way better than Hawksmoor in my view.

+1 for an 'All-in' at Blacklock.

Also Lurra does an amazing Galician steak from more mature animals...like nothing I've tasted elsewhere.

    Yep it’s good.
My sister lives around the corner and it’s a regular option for family meals etc.

I’ve been to STK and thought it over rated. Much prefer Hawksmoor…… Seven Dials is my favourite.

I think it'll be Hawksmoor Seven Dials for me based on recommendations and location.

Cheers folks. I'll report in when I've been.

Hawskmoor and Gaucho both good, but Goldman’s in Old Jewry is the best I’ve experienced. Expensive though.

Cheers for that. I was just after somewhere a short walk from the Victoria Palace theatre. Anywhere else roughly within the mile?

That’s my favourite too, a few beers outside the Mason’s Arms then a couple of doors down to Goodman

I’d agree Hawksmoor is good but I prefer Goodmans myself as does my wife.

Goodman in Maddox St is great.

I had lunch on Tuesday and it was superb. Really worth a visit.

If you want value then try the Bountiful Cow in Holborn.

Went to CUT at 45 park lane with a friend last month. Ended up going for the A5 wagyu which was to die for. Perfectly charred on the outside and nice and pink in the middle. Easily the priciest steak I’ve ever eaten but also the best. Worth a go for sure. Downside (for me anyway) is it’s a very swanky place

Hawksmoor, but for that something special it would have to be Goodman.

After a bit of a discussion regarding steak with a view, and having shown him this thread, my lad decided he fancied a bit of chateaubriand and as we were mooching round Covent Garden at the time, the Hawksmoor at Seven Dials was the obvious choice. It was as described and we all thoroughly enjoyed it, so thanks to all on here.

    This.

Hawksmoor Seven Dials or Guildhall have more plush dining rooms, but you’ll pay for the privilege of that. If what you want is really good quality steak, decent pints and wine, all at reasonable prices, this is for you.
