    Survival Kit Stocking Filler.

My kids are loving the SAS Survival handbook. I thought I'd get them a mini survival kit as a stocking filler. What should I get assuming it should I fit in something the size of a CWC tin?

Go to M&S. Buy as many tins of Curiously Strong Mints as you need. Eat the mints.
One for survival and one for first aid per child.
    How old are they?

A Silva type compass and teach them how to use it. Invaluable and fun to learn with the kids.

    There are lots of variations.

At the cheaper end, I think Go Outdoors and Cotswold do mini kits IIRC. You know, small knife, fire lighting kit, fishing line, wire saw, mirror, survival blanket etc. They sell some of it separately.

Then if you want to add cash to it, there are venom pumps and flares etc. The latter might be restricted and heavy though.

    Don't forget PLBs.

Edit - not all of it will fit in a tin!

Nicht Ize Doohickey mini multi tool. Carabiner style clip, screwdriver, spanner, about £5 from Amazon and do-able before Xmas

Worth a look? I have no experience of the seller nor the kit but it’s got to be worth a look.
If just a ‘fun’ a fire lighter, wadding, para cord, a small knife - like a SAK such as the waiter, a button compass and throw in a few Rat packs and it will do

Took me back to when I was a Cub Scout and we had to make one up, plasters, compass, signalling mirror, string, safety pin, matchsticks with wax on, and of course 10p for a phone box.
    Cheers..

Handy as the 10 pence could also be spent on another survival necessity - sherbert flying saucers.

My boy would love an AK, not sure about my daughter. They are roughly 12 and 14.

I'm very sure what age they are, I'm just blurring the borders for search engines, algorithms and my own paranoia. :)

Still love the sherbert saucers, Jase.

I think sherbert saucers would be a hit. We played the The Best of British Board Game pre-lunch and none of us could remember UFO shaped sherbert sweets were called!

A bit larger but more likely to be used - I bought my 9 year old one of these for £9.99: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mountain-Wa.../dp/B01LDHRUHY

It all fits inside the bottle.

Do you want to buy a complete kit or make one up with your children? I would say the latter will give them and you much more fun and satisfaction. Additionally, you can teach them how to use various items. Some years ago I used to instruct what was then called Combat Survival & Rescue and is now known as SERE (Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract). A survival kit is very personalised and will differ in requirement depending on theatre of operations but let's stick with the UK for now. Historically, for use during courses, you were permitted a small tobacco type tin, for operations it was completely up to the individual.

    Absolute Essentials:

    Fishing line
Fishing hooks (aside from taking livestock and digging up crops, fishing is about the most reliable form of food)
    Wire for making snare/noose traps
Small folding knife/tool. A mini Leatherman/Gerber type tool (if a knife is not part of standard body-worn kit)
    A wire saw
A flint and steel for fire lighting. (Matches and lighters will run out/run out of fuel)
Tampons (the most concentrated form of cotton wool to use as tinder to start fires)

Personal Items: (These will depend on your personal preferences)

Miniature folding toothbrush with the handle filled with toothpaste (This was a personal item I added for training but not on operational tours. Having clean teeth and fresh mouth was critical for me)
Miniature tube of toothpaste (as above)
A bag of spices to flavour food
    Multivitamin tablets

Things you wouldn't need but may be fun to teach your kids:

Compass - you can easily work out direction quite accurately using the sun and stars and generally from lichens etc. This will be good enough as you're unlikely to have a map. That said, for your purposes I would add one and teach them to use it.
Water purification - fresh water is easily available everywhere in the UK even in a survival situation. If you want to add something a straw water filter would be good.
Torch - you just won't use it in a military survival situation and it takes up quite a bit of space. If you need to look in the back of a dark cave, light a fire.

Would it be too cynical of me to suggest that they might also want the contact details of a literary agent so they can land a hefty book deal?

I can't believe that no one has suggested belly button fluff yet. Or in a pinch, tumble dryer lint.

    Head torch.

Add some biscuits brown for authenticity and some marge in a tube and they would get the real feeling of worth.

But to be serious a Heliograph would be ideal.

As a Cub Scout leader a few years back I used to run a session on Survival Skills and making your own survival tin was always one of my most popular nights.

I used this article as a basis as it follows most of Lofty Wiseman's guidance in the SAS Survival Handbook.....

    https://paulkirtley.co.uk/2011/bushcraft-survival-kit/

There's also a link to one you can buy ready made.

Thanks for all the suggestions. i've ordered a fit bits and pieces (fire steel, paracord, LED micro light, whistle etc.) that will be form stocking fillers, with the instructions to build you own survival tin. Might get me 10 more minutes in bed on Christmas morning weighted against the small risk of them burning the house down.

Pretty sure it's vital for SAS selection though.

They make you eat a bar during the the interrogation phase, but it's too harrowing to include in the TV version...
