Been away from the forum for quite some time. Been meaning to get back. This was the first topic to catch my eye.

Confess I didn't read thread in full, but I got the gist that certain profiteering types are basically taking the mick.
Does seem wrong that genuine enthusiasts are being trumped. I have perused Time Factors too and been close to a maybe buying a Precista PRS-82.
Hadn't realised at the time I might have had to deal with this annoyance.

Am not a web developer myself, but couldn't you use reCaptcha or similar to handle auto-instigated purchases?
Am sure the bad actors will be looking to get around whatever is put in their way, but might help for a while.

I only just discovered that this is now owned by Google and the facility is, I believe, free to use.

Agreed, some sort of Turing test would be good to help prevent fully automated purchases.

Using a CAPTCHA would not make any difference because some people would still be faster on the rest of the process. No need to use any bot, if you want to purchase something you have to:

1. Use a computer
2. Save your address on the time factors website beforehand
3. Use a tool to store and fill in your credit card information
