Cue images of slightly tipsy young men in fashionable glasses standing outside clubs and restaurants, frantically jabbing at their wrists as a low-battery icon blinks forlornly at them.
A watch for the Apple geeks.
Rumour has it that Apple will launch a revolutionay new watch (well, are not ALL Apple product revolutionary ... at least according to Apple  )
According to the article "it could be the greatest shake-up of the international watch market since the launch of the Swatch watch in 1983." :D
Display looks clear and almost as good looking as the Seiko SDGA. Looks like EPD. Might just be the artist blowing hot air, as I guess we do not know what it will look like for sure.

This other product was killed of apparently:
"While the reports of an iWatch are only speculation, it’s not the first time that a major computer company has entered the watch market. In October 2004 the Swiss watch behemoth Swatch, joined with its equivalent in the computer market, Microsoft, to announce the launch of the Swatch Paparazzi.
In a one-on-one interview with the author in 2005, the eccentric Swatch founder Nicolas Hayek told Jeweller, “We’re doing a radio-communication watch and you pay Microsoft a monthly fee to receive [just like a telephone] and you get all of the information you need wherever you are in the US. It’s been very successful. Bill Gates and my son, [Nicolas Hayek Jr] have created this and it’s running very well.”
The Paparazzi was a smart watch and was based on Microsoft’s SPOT (Smart Personal Objects Technology) technology and could be connected to MSN Direct.
The wearer would then choose only the information they wished to receive on their watch by visiting the MSN Direct website and wearers had the ability to personalise channels of information including news, sports, weather, horoscopes, personal messages, calendar appointment reminders and stockmarket quotes.
The Paparazzi was killed-off in April 2008 when Microsoft announced that it did “not have immediate plans to create a new version of the Smart Watch, as we are focused on other areas of our business.”

...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Desperately trying to use the 'slide' function.
If they do anything like that, and it's not just more stupid Apple rumours, it'll be off the back of the current Nanos being worn as watches. However if it looks anything like the pictures, I really can't see how it's the biggest shake up of the watch in years.
I haven't read any of the text but it already just looks like a different version of the nano... with a strap. I suppose some apps could be cool but then again, that's why I have an iPhone. The Nano is also super-inaccurate because the time has to be synced regularly with a PC apparently.
Apple? That means that is will be a very nice looking white manual watch for 2k 8)
Well if Android can do it - http://www.imshop.it

Very interesting  Whereas this kind of watch does not cater to my taste for mechanical treasures, it does tickle my gadget hunger :D
Good part is, that it will most likely be very reasonably priced compared to so many of the of the watches most of us look at :D
I like Apple stuff (I have enough of it!), but this just leaves me cold.
Apple my arse, it's a kid's toy.
In the near future all newborn babie's will be outfitted with a chip in their brain at birth, connecting them with the WWW and phones using their thoughts :) .
It's a cul-de-sac, this apple.
Daddel.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!

Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Rolex app coming!

Google and Android just released a branded watch too...
$59.99 to show your browser / OS support. Madness.
It will be a great little gadget and it is entirely possible it will capture the attention of those who want to wear a piece of gadgetry on their wrist but I don't see this as providing a great shake-up of the watch market.
peachy  :mrgreen:Originally Posted by Daddelvirks
tbh, the geek element appeals to me but i dont see it as redesigning the watch market.
I did not realize, that those were the prices! :shock:Originally Posted by Jake
You can get one heck of a watch else where for that kind of dosh.
Do these actually sell?
Good one :thumbright:Originally Posted by Seabadger

99% of the younger generation don't wear normal watches any more as they don't see the point of them. there could be a big market for something like this if its done right and Apple normally do this sort of thing right.
Even at 53 years old there are times when I would like to have messaging and maybe phone without having to 'carry' anything...
Yes, no matter what one thinks of Apple, there is no debating the fact, that the products sell well.
It's currently -15c in here, I'd expect that to shatter in seconds à la iPhone if I were to wear it outside.
Is that similar to being radished? :shock:Originally Posted by Daddelvirks
Apple have been quiet for a while.. would be interesting if they did release such a device! I can't see it being a must-have for me though tbh..
the artist impression in the links and the actual article was done on here before(rubber strap and intergrated SS case for a nano), with a guy pitching for people to invest in the scheme remember?
Nope, I do not remember that.
I have not seen anybody pitching this type of watch/having a vested interest in selling.
NANO have been posted several times before, but the NANO watches on straps, that I have seen are hardly the same as this
I've no interest in it but I'd say there's definitely a market for an iWatch. Kids would go for it and it could be great for the gym, cylcing, running etc. It would need a bluetooth headset though otherwise headphone wires become a PITA running up your arm (as my wife worked out when she was going to buy a strap for her iPod nano).
Headphone wires are annoying enough as is - let alone running up the arm.
I could see, how that would be a PITA.
Hmm, not for me thanks, but i guess im stuck in my ways for my age.
Will only appeal to those who put alleged style over substance and be very poor value for money.
It will appeal to the gay/trendy/fashion market like all other Apple products.

This gadget could have little functionality compared to the rest of the Apple range but will still sell by the shed load.
Apple do make some cracking products with a very simple interface but they are not merely a brand any more, they are almost verging on religion. People will snap up anything they release.

The fact is that many people no longer see a watch as necessary for telling the time. Especially not mechanical watches. Just as most people don't hark back to using film cameras because they prefer the joy of mechanical... not even WIS. Digital photography is much more convenient and versatile. Similarly I can see how the future of watches for the vast majority will integrate with the Internet and mobile smartphone age. Wearing of wristwatches (particularly mechanical) is already increasingly motivated by reasons other than the express purpose of telling the time.

I think the ipod nano watch has seem some latch on to the idea of a fully integrated smartphone/watch is workable but the problem IMO is power. Will people be struggling to get a full days usage out of a watch before it needs plugged in ?
All true... but won't change the fact that you'll look like a twit holding a button on your wristphone while barking up close into it "computer... computer..."Originally Posted by AstroBoy
Does this mean Apple will have effectively reinvented the wristwatch? For wealthy middle-class affluenza types with brand allegiances and plenty of disposable and/or credit facilities, at least?

I don't think there is any weight in this article. It's over a month old, and although that's not a huge amount of time in ordinary life, in the world of online blogging/engadget/Apple web-o-sphere-hype, 4 weeks+ is a lifetime - and there has been not other serious weight given to this proposed new product.
Young people don't want watches in any form or shape.
This won't do the trick for Apple :)

Got an Apple fanboy friend who hates watches.
I told him about this rumour yesterday and he got massively excited. He hates watches, has no idea what an Apple watch would do, but already needs one.
How do Apple do it?
Self-perpetuating machine.
Once they got the ball moving ...
Unless they really mess up, [s:3i2c82f9]Apple lemmings[/s:3i2c82f9]..., I mean the satisfied customers ... will continue to gobble up every product, that Apple churns out.
Even the debacle in regards to batteries with a built-in fail rate did not even cause a ripple in Apple sales.
I like this better than 99% of common quartz watches, and I'm not even an apple person. Most non mechanical watches seem to want to emulate their mech counterparts to a certain degree even when it doesn't serve function. This is more utilitarian conceptually imo. That said I probably wouldn't wear one myself, but I'd rather see a bunch of these around town than some shitty [insert clothing label here] pieces.
Not for me
Haven't these been out ages? You can get a strap to wear an iPod nano on your wrist as a watch.
One of the "artist's impressions" looks to be just a photo of a Nano on a strap, and yes, those have been available for some time.
And they didn't exactly take the world by storm so I doubt an iwatch wouldOriginally Posted by Seabadger
