    Dog walking outfit advice !

I know there are a lot of experienced dog walkers on here, so speaking as a new dog owner with winter approaching I’m hoping for some advice or tips on what people are wearing, it will be through local fields with tall grass, this is fairly level going and up into the woods which is quite steep going with slippery paths.

Ideally waterproof but also not too hot for the jacket and waterproof but also grippy soles, for the boots.

    Winter wellies - Skellerup
    Summer wellies - Decathlon

Leather boots - Altberg or Hoggs Rannoch

For a coat I wear either a Barbour or reasonably inexpensive gore-tex alternative.

Trousers - anything if dry, and when wet either chaps or a gore-tex over trouser.

My winter dog walking get-up is:
Mountain Equipment Garwhal Jacket over a t-shirt as I get hot quite quickly.
Craghopper waterproof over trousers (on top of some cheap walking pants).
    Brasher Hillmaster II boots.
    Tilley Wanderer hat👍

Always wear boots, have had two pairs of Scarpa GTX. They have never leaked, have worn the soles out before they leak, but I do walk 4 - 5 miles a day. Although I think Scarpa will replace the soles now. I have a Barbour which I've had since the early 80s, but there are now better waterproof kit around. If its wet I wear Parimo top and bottoms. If its just cold, I walk win a Buffalo mountain short and Rohan bags or similar.

    Dog walking outfit advice !

I’ve left the old-school Barbour concept behind in favour of breathable lightweight materials. Berghaus Mera Peak jacket has kept me dry in biblical rain as well as allowing perspiration out. Trousers are trickier as I get too hot with over trousers so use Craghopper hiking trousers that get wet but dry again quickly. Boots depend on foot shape so go to a decent store with quality brands (gore-tex is a must).
As long as I’m in the right clothing I enjoy the dog walk in any weather.

Thanks for the advice so far! Are the Barbour jackets breathable? I like the idea of a waxed jacket because I have an ageing north face raincoat that lets water in, despite re proofing it recently!

Does having a dog mean you need special clothes in addition to normal outdoor clothes? If so I may have been breaking some unwritten rule taking my mutt out in jeans and an old jacket.

    The Musto is breathable.

Do you need it? Well, only when you walk on/in rough terrain. No need for the chaps and fancy ‘survival’ shoes on the pavement.
The coat always comes handy in this NW European climate.

Brilliant! That would be waterproof all right but I recon it might be a bit sweaty.

I like to go quite a way off the beaten track sometimes, so decent grippy boots are essential

Of course that's fine for you amateur dog walking peasants but for us more serious dog-walking aficionados, the latest £1k+ outfit from the classifieds section of "Horse & Hound" is the absolute bare minimum.

It does! Although I am due a new rain coat and boots so they will get used for other things possibly, the dog has to have two walks every day so a dedicated overcoat and boots is not that extravagant. 21st century problems haha

... and the the 'must have' Holland&Holland Range Rover! Not the dilapidated, smoke bellowing Land Rover of my neighbor down the road with its benches in the back for his gun dogs and some sort of extended orange crate for his guns!

Can’t imagine my Rottweiler with Barbour. I suppose it’s (sadly) more Hugo Boss for that type of dog.

Whenever i`m out with the hounds you`ll always see me sporting a pair of Vibram brogues, open-backed driving gloves which offer the best purchase on the leashes of a pair of eager beagles, hearing-aid beige sta-press action slacks and a Gary Lineker signature cardigan from the Alan Partridge collection at M&S.
And a baseball cap with an 'open 6' embroidered on it.

Exactly wear what the heck you want. No such thing as bad weather it’s just wrong clothes. Dogs don’t care as long as they’re with you. Our lurcher (Saluki Mongrel) doesn’t like really heavy rain.

Fortunately Bull Terriers have an aversion to water and won't go out in the rain so I don't need specialist wet weather gear.

Normal wear is fleece, jeans, wellies (boots/trainers in the summer) and a cap.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I have now got a pair of Meindl gore Tex boots found them on sale in an outdoors shop, they seem good, definitely waterproof and are comfy without any breaking in so will see how they last!
Also picked up a mountain equipment goretex rain coat, this is a pretty cool piece of technical outdoors wear, it feels like some weird space material.
I am ready to tackle the fields with gusto this winter!

  37. #37
Took back the boots because they leaked! The mountain equipment jacket is a revelation so far, even in freezing temperatures despite it being so thin and light.

  38. #38
Pockets.....some jackets have very shallow pockets, this is a pain for dog walking, as you need to stuff poo bags, treats, keys, phone, maybe a training line, somewhere.

Barbours are good for this - especially the one.with the poachers pocket, can get loads in there.

Chest pocket accessable from the outside very useful, can keep your phone in there and check it without opening the jacket and getting cold.

I used to swear by Brasher boots years ago. I may be wrong but they sold out and moved production overseas and changed the sole design etc. Never seen any that floated my boat since, which is a real shame as I absolutely loved them.

For me, the sole design worked so well. I see they have now become 'Berghaus' Hillmasters :-(

Any hunting or hiking kit works, but I like Keela and Harkila. I'm on The Downs and this time of year, I don't even bother with boots and wear Croc like Birkenstocks - as long as everything else is properly warm your feet will not get cold in an hour or two and you can rinse them off as you shower the dog and be ready to go next time. Get a dedicated heavy duty treat bag and put a bell on it so the dog knows when you get it out and pays attention.` Mind you, it's not all bad, it was lovely doing agility in the park this morning:

It’s called a Lhotse, I just wear a couple of layers under it like a t shirt and thin fleece. It keeps a good temperature without getting sweaty when you are walking

Crocs ! I would end up on my butt wearing something like that…where we are it’s very hilly and muddy so I just use work type leather boots at the moment, bit heavy but waterproof - can’t handle wet feet.
We are using a long line with our dog now for teaching recall and general safety, we had limited success with treats as his prey/chase drive is very high and we want him to run around
