    Friday Watches - August 2021

Beneath a blanket of grey cloud August came and went in a flash. Winds that seemed to arrive from most points north of the compass made autumn feel a lot closer than usual. Which is not really what this years staycationers were hoping for when they booked an exorbitantly priced getaway in an idyllic cottage somewhere in our beautiful countryside. But I am not here to complain about the weather, no I want to complain about the declining standards of the Friday thread, one of the last bastions of decorum on this forum. On the 27th the bounds of decency were not merely stepped over, CaptainRockNRoll hopped, skipped and jumped right over them. In what Tetlee christened a "throne shot" the offender of sensibilities shared with us a photo of not only his BB58 but also his Morley's from within the public bogs at the Studland ferry, Poole presumably having just released Tarka. I suppose it could have been worse, he could have been in the worst toilet in Scotland.

Numbers echoed the slide in decency and dropped further as holidays were taken and the stresses of daily life and forum politics were briefly and gladly forgotten. Some 555 watches were posted throughout the month which means we struck a new monthly low. This low was echoed in just about all of our stats. Lowest weekly average (138.75), lowest number of brands (118) and a few brands had monthly lows too but more of that a little later on.

The month started in predictable fashion with Rolex ruling the roost and Omega and Seiko jostling for the second and third spots. However, on the 20th there was disturbance in the force. Omega kicked off and wasn't pulling any punches, being the first to ten examples (a rare event) and ending up on fourteen, only one watch behind Rolex's fifteen. Added to this Seiko had their worst week ever and didn't make it in to double figures hitting a miserly seven. They were beaten into sixth by Timefactors, Tudor and Panerai. The disturbance didn't last very long and come the 27th Omega were back in their usual third place with Rolex in second on twenty and Seiko bouncing back to first on twenty one.

There were some beacons of light in the darkness. On the 6th we saw the most Linde Werdelin of which four examples were seen, helping earn that brand a spot in the top ten that week. On the 20th Panerai hit their new weekly high of eleven which helped them to their second best monthly figures of thirty one. Yet another weekly high came from Scurfa who hit three on the 27th. Certina attained a monthly high of five.

The number of new arrivals also dropped but to a still healthy thirteen. There was only one previously seen brand to make their first appearance this year and that was Scubapro. Amongst the twelve brands making their first appearance on the Friday thread were: (surprisingly) Hermes, the well named Duckworth Prestex, Bund and Tactical Frog. To stick with the natural theme JackW treated us to his rather nice Pellikaan.

We were treated to a wonderful range of interesting watches, from Tokyo Tokei's Cyma G10, Gav's Junghans Mega and JackW's sublime Aquastar Seatime. One watch launch which caught my eye when I first came here was the Zodiac's LE Super Sea Wolf so seeing Coredriller's example made me smile. One final mention goes to Rajen and his Kobe Bryant tribute watch which bears more than a passing resemblance to a Blancpain.

Time constraints this month have been such that I haven't been able to produce any bonus content, plus I ran out of ideas so you will just have to be satisfied with the numbers. Here they are in all their glory:

Luckily I missed the Throne Shot (And I'll resist the urge to check it!).

Always an interesting read, I certainly felt numbers were down, so good to see it wasn't just old age creeping up on me.

It'll be interesting to see if numbers pick up as the Autumn and Winter arrive or whether this is a general downturn.

Keep up the great work, it's appreciated!
