What are peoples' thoughts on this movement please? I am intrigued by their watches but not being well versed in the whole scene, but trying to learn, I wondered how reliable these movements are proving to be. Just because it passed COSC when it was built doesn't mean it will still be going in 20 years time, like some of the other 'better known' makes will. I don't have money to throw around like some people and am looking for my 'significant birthday' watch. The standard C60 is not very accurate at +/-20 secs a day, but the SH21 movement is rated at +/- 4-6 seconds, which is pretty good and you might be lucky and get one that runs even sweeter.

I suppose what I am asking is have Chr Ward proven to be reliable watches over the years? Are they robust to stand up to daily use year in year out? Or am I better looking higher up the scale? Please be patient with me! I do like the styling of the Wards, but I also need robustness and accuracy.

    Hi OP,

Have you tried the CW forum for advice ref the SH21 movement? CW are in a very small minority on here but I for one will vouch for them. I only have one watch of theirs but am mightily impressed with the quality, can’t speak for longevity as I’ve not had it for a year but don’t expect any issues, although mine (Super Compressor) has a base SW200 movement.

I bought a very early first gen SH21 - movement was perfect, superb time keeper but didnt take to the watch so sold it. I replaced it with their SH21 based diver, that wasnt so hot with its time keeping so sent it back and it was with back with me within a week operating well inside COSC - didnt really like that watch either, it felt a bit clumsy on the wrist so sold that on too. They have long warranties and from my experience very solid customer service - all low volume movements carry risk (my Damasko DK15 for instance) but if you can locate a later used SH21 based watch I'm sure it will be a good sound buy.

I have had two, both kept great time and the have a 5 day power reserve. The movement in the one I still have is visible from front and back also looks great. It is though a little on the thick side.

I think CW deserve great credit for developing their own movement and they produce some really good watches at a competitive price point. That said you rarely have to pay full price either, there are loads of sales and vouchers.

Can't talk for the SH21 but I've had loads of CWs and all have been within +-5 SPD. And as they have used ETA or sellita for most they will be equally reliable to any other makes using those movements. No reason why they shouldn't be ticking away without problems in 20 or 30 years time like most "Swiss" watches

One thing that really puts me off CW is their almost permanent sales. I think that the watches are great and a number I would be happy to own but it seems to cheapen the brand by the constant sales. Every time I think about buying one, I've missed a sale and when the next sale comes around, it's given me enough time to change my mind. If they were full price all the time I would have purchased one by now. I'll get a CW one day, I just need to time it right!

I presume you're quoting the tolerances for the movement of the C60 - In my experience, CW do a good job of regulating their watches - My Makira runs at 0 s/d on a timegrapher and the older C60s I had were good timekeepers, too, although I never checked them on a timegrapher.

The regular half prices sales are (sadly, as it made their watches a bit of a bargain) a thing of the past - They have sales now and then, but usually the big discounts are on returned watches or slow moving models that they are discontinuing.

That said, their current range are definitely a classier watch than those that were regularly sold at 50% of RRP, not that those were actually bad watches imo.

I have 3 CWs. All recent purchases. Quality is fantastic and near on par with Tudor for a lot less cost, especially if you choose the Sellita movements. Plus you get features you don’t get on a Tudor such as lumed and ceramic bezel.

There a lot of noise around CW branding, and in an industry where heritage allows for sales at vastly inflated prices, CW loses out in this area.

My advice is to wait for the Jan sale (they have 2 sales per year) and pick up a returned watch or discontinued model (it may only be a size or colour rather than model) for 30 or 40% discount respectively. Though you have to be bloody quick as they sell out in seconds.

Otherwise Black Friday should see 15% discount across the board, and at other times there’s a £100 voucher floating round, although one has just expired, but like a London bus
