Is there a good/easy way to get a private sale valuation

Hi folks this might be a stupid question, but I’ve valued watches in the past using places like watchfinder and they always lowball your watch and want top prices on theirs.

I’m looking at reducing my collection to make space for new, but apart from examples on sales corner, eBay, chrono24 etc, are there other valuation tools available?

    Cheers.
    Pete.

I think you have covered the bases there, but remember on e-bay to check the watches sold, not those listed at crazy prices that have sat there for ages. Even on SC things can sell for cheaper than listed. Most dealers will only be interested in the popular Swiss brands, but if you have any of those offer them to a few dealers and see what offers you get. You can ignore their asking price, that doesn’t come in to it.

Hood is accurate for the 5 digit stuff if you have any of those. He seems to keep a constant eye on the market.

Might have to drop him a line..................

How do you check sold prices on ebay? Do you have to have them on your "watch list" (no pun intended) - or can you search without that?

    Cheers

Search for the watch/model and tick the sold/completed listings box. I think you can check up to 6 months back?

I use watch charts, and search via all forum mode.

A decent independent jeweller should be able to give you realistic values. For a fee, of course.

For private sales? I’d have thought that highly unlikely.

I’d say your own internet research should be the best solution unless it’s something really expensive/esoteric.

    You've neglected the easiest option.

Advertise it at an inflated price and you'll soon get a flood of people letting you know what the correct price should be!

As above except after searching for say “ Omega Speedmaster” you then click “ advanced “ on the right hand side of the search box, then follow instructions above ( thats what I have to do on an ipad)

The low SC prices used not to be connected to commercial value. Sadly those days are long gone (with the odd exception)

Oh well. It must only be the ‘decent independent jeweller’ near me then. YMMV.

Anyone got a personal line to him? His inbox is full, so can someone ask him to clear a bit of space?
