Once again, it doesn't pay to work in Britain

Readers of a certain age may recall when the marginal rate of tax on unearned income was 98% under a Labour govt.

Once again, it doesn't pay to work in Britain. Just ease back on benefits as personal tax (plus those 'green' levies) sky-rockets!

If you voted Tory (not saying you did OP) and are a Tory cheerleader then don’t complain. If you ever thought the Tories could be the party of ordinary working people then you were seriously deluded. The Tories are just doing what Tories do, screwing over ordinary folk and favouring their chums.

You should have posted this in the Bear Pit along with the other numerous boring and repetitive threads that the same 5 or 6 TZ lefties will reply to.

    2020:

    UK 30.8%

    OECD Average 34.6%

Whether taxpayers get value for money, is a different question.

I think it misses out a lot of after earnings taxes for a lot of countries - Duties, VAT, Rates, the list goes on - the UK, as I’m sure lots of others also do, dream up additional taxation at an ever increasing rate.
It's just a matter of time...

There’s no doubt that higher taxes stifle an economies productivity. Taxing too much almost certainly raises less tax revenue. The hard part is finding the sweet spot.

And letting the likes of Amazon and Starbucks pay almost nominal amounts of tax certainty doesn’t help, either.

Never understood why people think that companies should pay a similar amount of tax to individuals.

This doesn't include the recent changes in NI.

Of course, for retail that’s broadly true. But services such as accounting and banking is another matter. They can simply shut shop and move somewhere with more favourable conditions.

But ultimately it has nothing to do with personal taxation.

When you look at people who skived all their lives and cynically lived off benefits, doing a bit of cash in hand, you're probably right. But most people want to work hard and try to get on in life, it's just a fact they will always be the ones paying in to the system. If anyone can come up with a system that provides healthcare, benefits, social care and pensions without the middle classes paying for most of it they will have the holy grail of taxation.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
