Reading through your post brought back some terrible memories of my own families hell brought on by this terrible disease .
My sister and her partner lost their own little angel to meningitis some 20+ years ago ,the speed of this infection is truly terrifying ,from thinking it was cold /flu on a Saturday evening to the end on the following Tuesday afternoon .
The unbelievable part of this is that they did everything correctly called the doctor as a precaution ,she was taken straight into our local hospital immediately then onto Leeds L.G.I. where they did absolutely everything possible all to no avail .
The effect it had on us all was awful ,to be honest i don't think our parents ever really got over it.
Heartfelt sympathies to you and all your family at this horrible time .

    Terrible, just terrible.

My deepest condolences to you and all your family.

Clicked to read based on the title - which as I started reading, realized was such an understatement , considering what you are going through.

Very sorry and saddened. My condolences to you and family.

Oh that is so horrible and I am so sorry for your and your family’s loss. Life can be so cruel and unfair.

Please know that your pain is shared and we are with you.

  19. #69
I haven’t the words but echo everyone else’s condolences and words of support.

The pain your son and his partner must be in now will be unimaginable and for your whole family.

Nothing is more special than our children and we take life for granted most days.

    I’m sorry for your loss.

I wish all of you the very best in what must be desperately difficult times. As a parent I can't come close to fully understanding as even trying to do that makes feel sad.

Heartbreaking to read I just can’t imagine living it. Simply awful. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care

  38. #88
That was a difficult read. Must have been awful seeing the events unfold before you and then to write your passage and for this to be your reality at the moment. Too much

Thoughts and prayers with you. X

I’m brought to tears reading this. Extremely cruel and devastating. I can’t imagine how you are all coping.

I’m not religious, but I will believe in heaven for this beautiful angel.

Oh what a little beauty, so sorry...Life is sometimes pain.

I'm having a wobbly head time again...for all your kind and thoughtful comments, thank you seems so inadequate, but a genuine thank you is the best I can do.
For those who've found themselves in a similar situation, I'm starting to understand your grief, I too am so sorry.

Son and his partner are talking quite freely but they wear a look of utter despair, sadness and confusion and I'm not sure that the harsh reality has sunk in.

While we, as grandparents, feel devastated it pales into insignificance to how they, as parents, must feel. They watched this tragedy unfold in front of them in real time, while we were somewhat remote.

To their credit, they're sorting out funeral arrangements. Sadly, they don't have the funds but again they've been pointed to sources that have been outstanding and they're going to get a helpful chunk towards the cost and we'll pick up the shortfall. Once they found this out you could sense a small weight being lifted. I'm amazed at their strength and wish I had a small part of it.

As a final few words related to sons drug taking.
His Mum and I are acutely aware there are triggers that can cause the tough journey to recovery to fail. I can't think of anything worse that could be a trigger than this.
While they were in the hospital and they knew the situation was hopeless, the hospital vicar spoke to them and pointed out a book in which they could write a 'letter to God'
Son's partner photo'd what he wrote, this sentence - very touching and frightening...
'I've been bad and far from being a good person. You gave me Courtney and she was the glue in my recovery. Why are you taking her away?...'

As parents we're trying to find the right time to ask him not to dishonour Courtney's memory in returning to his old ways.

For now I'll cling to hope that Courtney is in heaven as a beautiful little Angel.

    Thank you all again.

    Very sorry to hear this.

That must be devastating. So, so sorry.

I'm trying to think of something I can say that might help.

At times like these, I'm not sure what the best way forward is but there will be counsellors who can help you all.

There was a story on Radio 4 this morning which should still be available on catch up somewhere.

It involved the editor of Tatler who lost her sister when she was very young. She discussed in detail how her Father, who was a heroin addict, relapsed after the sister passed (after years of sobriety) and her Mother, who was an alcoholic in recovery, found God instead of going back to the bottle. Perhaps the strong social bonds of religion helped. Possibly there may be similar social groups which aren't tied to religion who can help to share the burden of grief at such a difficult time.
