I have a FXD arriving tommorow, I have ordered a 22mm CNS paratrooper in the green and yellow original colourway.

I found out some more info, not sure if its allready known.

Here is the MN store showing the watch at normal retail price but not available to order just now.

I like the basic Yemas as well.

I have found one issued 21 for sale by auction that didnt sell.
It seems to me If servicemen are selling their watches designed for a specific purpose then they can not be doing the job.
In the British Army there would be an investigation if this was so.

Its good to see the French getting priorities right here is the Navy knife along with corkscrew.

I know how important wine is to them I once delivered their booze (including plastic wine glasses) for Bastille day to 2 REP outside Tomislavgrad.

Nothing to investigate. It’s private purchase not an issued item of kit.

Yea it is not government property.
It does happen in certain cases for collaboration with military services that the soldier has to sign a sort of contract, binding him to keep the watch for at least X years (5 for example).
Not sure if this was the case for those original FXDs, but it had been the case for certain versions of the bb58 done in collaboration with certain french military groups.

In any case, and whatever the contract might say (if there is one), it still is a private purchase, at preferential price, and therefore the individual’s property

The one in my link is a private purchase from a French PX.

The 2 liner and marked on the back with a specific number Is for use as intended.

They had sold out of 21mm or I would have bought that seeing as that was the original strap size from back in the day.

I have some standard black and grey NATOS to try it on as well.
The Nick Mankey I currently have is his MN version

The two new ones came to £59 posted having had the CC bill now.

If you buy form the PX it’s not issued

As you pointed out earlier, none of these are “issued” in the traditional sense
They are a private purchase item that serving members of the MN can buy at a discounted rate. These watches are subtly different to the commercial items the public can buy. If bought from the PX it’s just the same as buying in a standard Tudor shop.

Two liners are still a private purchase . My understanding is you spec the engraving on deposit ( and LHD is you wish) and balance is paid prior to delivery. Same with Sqn watches from Brietling, Bremont, Tudor, omega, CW, B&R to name but a few

Mine has arrived,I have tried a few straps I think the OEMs are very good.

It needs a dark coloured strap if you ask me.

Going to try the rubber in a minute, its been on a CNS paratrooper for an hour which suits it and lowers it on the wrist.

I didnt buy it for its looks its like a SAAB 900 the beauty is in its practicality.

I was thinking of buying the short version and moving the Velcro round for a better fit seems they are about £140.

On an Omega site I saw this on a FXD which looks quite good, what do you think?

    Anyone having any bezel issues?

Mine will have to go back to be looked at when I get chance.

Bezel numbers and markers are pitting and appear to be coming lose and not sitting flush in ceramic. It also feels loose like it’s stuck on with double sided tape and not seated properly.

Back on the fabric strap which is perfect for it.

  22. #672
Picked up one of the Eliot Brown straps mentioned above.

    https://elliotbrownwatches.com/colle...webbing-straps

    Quick (ish) verdict:

    Looks good, easy to fit.

Has a buckle system that the blurb says was about rethinking Velcro. Plus side is it wears more like a MN in that it’s quite low profile, the Velcro look isn’t for everyone. Down side, like the Octopod, it is slightly the solution to a problem maybe not many people have (although I like the Octopod as I wanted a clasp on a fabric strap).

Quality of the strap is very nice, feels more like soft material than NATOs which can be a bit plasticky. This isn’t nylon webbing you can buy for pennies. Slightly thinner than the Tudor Velcro webbing though so watch head would be a bit flappy if you like to wear your straps on the loose side.

Clasp is nicely made, not chunky like the Octopod. Jury is slightly out on how secure but they say has been tested and iterated so fear of the new I guess!

You can fit the Octopod elasticated webbing to the clasp and those are 10 quid a pop if you wanted to switch up the colours. Caveat - the clasp is obviously designed with their webbing in mind so again, how secure, not sure.

    In order of preference:
    Tudor Velcro
    Erika’s MN
This strap / Octopod - this if you want a lower profile buckle system.

Goldsmiths Bluewater had one on display today. Not sure if for sale or not, was quickly passing & personally looking at the new BB36s.

I got the call from Tudor Battersea this week which is about 8 months since I enquired. But I acquired one a lot earlier this year so did not need it.

Can I ask how the owners are finding these watches in general?

Any issues with quality and how do they wear on the wrist?

    Any regrets?

Nope. Mine is my daily wearer now. I didn’t like the way the supplied rubber strap sat and found the Velcro on the fabric was a bit poor. But I now use an Erikas Original or a Nick Mankey and they work great. Other than that timekeeping is v good and no other issues.

  30. #680
No issues here either. Wear mine most days now too and time keeping seems good. It wears very nicely, the lug to lug dimensions are a red herring and don’t convey how it feels on the wrist.

  31. #681
    That’s good to hear, thanks.

I was actually hoping to try one on today as I was in Whitby and I thought Watches of Whitby had one in but no it had gone.

    I’ll keep looking.

Public service announcement - it’s a royal pain in the arse trying to remove sun cream caked into the back of the standard rubber strap because it has a fine weave pattern to it. If anyone has any tips, let me know, soap and warm water only partially successful.

Warm soapy water and a nail brush or similar might work?

Two of the markers on my bezel have now fallen out with more to follow soon by the look of it.

Only wear it during the day and remove at night, never been in the water, case back sticker still on.

Will have to take it into goldsmiths and see what the verdict is.

Little disappointed but it is what it is.

This is the first I have heard of this on the FXD. It seems to be an issue on the larger watch. Tudor should sort it as it’s an issue they know about on the Pelagos.
Touch wood my ETA is still good (wearing it today)

  36. #686
This is a real shame. I’m delighted with my BB58 but the date change issues with the gmt put me off that particular watch - as Tudor never really explained the issue or if they’ve fixed the new movements, we are just left to guess. Now this with the Pelagos - again it might have been a bad batch but they are silent about the issue. Very odd when you can get a ceramic bezel on a £99 steeldive and I’ve never seen one of those for sale with lume dropped out of the bezel?!? If I spend north of £3k on an item I don’t expect to have to return it. Sure there will always be the odd issue and that’s what a warranty is for but these bezel issues - like the gmt date change - seem to be quite widespread. They need to be honest and open about a fix and put some effort into fixing it at factory level imho.

These certainly seem to be a lot easier to get than when I went on the dreeded "list" for my first one. Found this in the window of the local Tudor Boutique. They also had the new black one - not for sale, but told fairly easy to get (they had sold one the previous day) Surprised how much I like the new one - if only it didn't have the text at the top! I could live with the Red Bull bit, but as a proud Kiwi/Team NZ supporter there's no way I'm wearing an Alinghi branded anything!!

Two NM straps arrived today. Takes ages from order date. Hopefully his upgraded shop will speed things up now. Got a navy one at the same time which looks a good blue match. Decided between a red and orange for the other just to have something a bit more out there. Went with red. It is more of a crimson red. Happy with it.
