    New Nivada Antarctic Spider reissue

    I LOVE this

Pre orders on Thursday. At around £600 after tax it is a strong proposition

No way of telling the time at a glance. It’s a no from me.

I think you are correct - looks like hard work.

Interesting idea, that doesn’t quite work.

I think it would have been so much nicer with a simple cross-hairs dial.

It looks a very busy dial and it’s difficult to tell the hands from the lines.

It seems a bit pointless as a watch tbh

Pretty challenging to read, so no.

Ryan, didn’t your last Nivada have some significant timekeeping issues out of the box?

I like how they used the original case shape with the distinct lugs, but I'm not a fan of the dial. I'd definitely take my original over this one.

That on the other hand looks very nice indeed.

It was magnetised and was +1 minute a day. A tenner spent on a demagnetiser from Amazon and it went to +2 secs a day.

I like the overall look (being a sucker for this style of watches) but in terms of actually seeing what time it is, that would drive me mad.

It really is lovely, and very evocative of a bygone time. But the dial could almost have been designed to obscure the time from the wearer.

Pretty as a fashion watch, but if it’s easier to tell the time with the lights off then it’s a no from me. Also, they were so concerned about legibility they put a cyclops over the date window, but then chose that dial.

    Bit of a confused mess.

Does it have the penguin on the back?

I’m curious whether it would be more legible with a black dial, silver spiders legs and the same silver handset. Probably not now I think about it!

    New Nivada Antarctic Spider reissue

The spider dial is a legitimate idea for a re-issue but the most interesting thing with this one is the fact that they've corrected their mis-step on the first iteration with the re-introduction of classic chamfered lugs. Well when I say corrected it may be more accurate to say attempted to correct - all of the pictures on the website show the edges of the chamfer as very, very soft - almost as if they've been polished by a backstreet bodger. I've been following the originals on Ebay for almost a couple of years and they rarely look as soft as this - has anybody seen a real-life photo?

Here's a really good example of an original with crisp edges:

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
