    Maggots in Strawberries :-(

Ok, so its summer holidays and both the wife and I are working from home, whilst the kids entertain themselves.

Today, my zoom meeting was interrupted by screaming. My kids had seen a tik tok on strawberries and the maggots that live in them. They had taken strawberries i bought last night at Tesco and plunged them into a brine solution. Hey presto and live wiggly maggots appear!

It really turned me off my lunch!

    Protein?
Just dropped off my other half to walk the dog, she (not the dog) loves wild blackberry's, which tend to have a load of wrigglers in them

Just think of them as free protein (I accept that's not going to work on your kids though!).

Fruit fly larvae probably. There's an invasive species in town that attacks healthy whole fruit unlike normal fruit flies which only go for the damaged ones.
Last year most of my strawberries were inedible due to these guys. My strawberry patch is 4x4m and normally produces several kilos. This year they were lost due to the rain. I think I'll get rid and plant spuds instead.

Years ago I found weevils in my pancake batter. Shuddering now just thinking about it. Always check your Bisquick, folks!

If you are going to plant potatoes, make sure you choose pest resistant varieties, which will make a big difference to how many get damaged by wireworms etc. My favourite varieties are Innovator, Kestrel, Yukon Gold and Victoria.

You need to stop your kids watching 'made up social media' videos online.

My dog eats them off the bushes now after I made the mistake of giving him a couple while out on walks.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
