    Help needed - dress watch

Morning all, my brother in law would lime to buy his brother a watch, for his birthday.

Requirements are round face, slim profile, nothing complicated. Price wise around £1000, Used is OK.

This Jaeger fits the bill but is far too dear, (and actually from my experience of a Geographic may be too hard to read)

This Oris also looks OK at first glance but was dismissed for the machined edge.

I don’t have much idea on dress watches- any suggestions?

Really there is so much choice. Try looking at Tissot and Longines for starters.

For something a bit different these are a little over at £1,300. Alexander Shorokhoff Sixty-Three

    Stowa Marine
    Nomos Orion / Tangente

Definitely Nomos Orion in 35mm although the budget may need to be increased slightly.

Always been an admirer of the Junghans Max Bill. Well within budget and the Bauhaus style is, in my opinion, very dressy but also useable on a day to day basis. Also hits the nail on the head if you are looking for a slim watch.

The “slim profile” criterion might rule it out, but take a look at the Tissot Visodate.

Nomos Orion or Tangente for sure.

Jura did 15% off a Tangente for me very recently

I've got a Tangente and have had a Max Bill, and wouldn't describe them as dress watches. They're smart all right, but in a clean, practical way, not like you're dressing up. The Max Bill in particular felt all wrong in the evening.

I think dress watch may not be the most accurate description in this case, I think the intent is “not a sports watch but good for everyday use”

Can I suggest a used Grand Seiko 9F such as the SBGX061? Might be a touch small at 37mm but could fit the bill (and could actually be perfect size if the buyer isn't used to huge watches or wearing a watch in general). It's a no nonsense 3 hander with great build quality, a theoretical 50 year service interval and will be more accurate than it needs to be in practical terms.

I think for “not a sports watch” Hamilton have a lot of choice in that price bracket (lots in the Jazzmaster line up), Tissot have some, but also worth a look is the Seiko Presage “sharp edge” range...
