    Landscaping bark

I've recently taken delivery of a bulk bag of Rolawn landscaping bark, like this:

    https://www.rolawn.co.uk/bark-mulch/...-bark-bulk-bag

However the contents are wet, the whole bag of bark chippings. This is my second delivery this year and the first bag was bone dry.

Should it bother me that it's wet?! Makes it harder to move and to work with is the main problem.

No idea how it would have gotten wet like that, it's been stored undercover in my garage and the roof isn't leaking. Not just the top layer either, it's wet all the way through.

    Thanks all.

    Is it going outside?

Well, yes but the chippings are kind of slimy!

Also, I won't need to use it all at once and was planning on keeping some stored in my garage for a later date - that may not be a good idea if the contents are going to stay damp. Don't want fungus growing there.

I buy mulching bark from my local builders merchants in 90l sacks. It is nearly always wet when I open the bag. Possibly your bag has been stored outside, wheras as your first was stored inside before you bought it.

I suspect the recent heavy rain might have something to do with it, I bet not many builders bags of things like this are stored under cover.

I buy it in 25kg bags and it’s always wet, never been a problem.

Ah okay, seems it's not unusual then. Thanks all!

Mind you, I'm not happy about the crushed drinks can and other crap that I found amongst the bark chippings.

Is it wet on the top or even inside the bag? Like a thatched roof, the wet parts only sit on the outside when it has been in the rain. But... when it's also wet inside (because it was wet before it was packed in the bag) it will start to rot, slowly but surely.

Must say that I can make a fortune selling that sort of bags when I see those prices!
I have more wood and wood chips than I want/need. The score of one Winter + stormy Spring is 17m3 splitted logs for my log burner. And the same amount of chips from pine trees.

I laid a small area on the drive. Within a week it was full of cat mess

Same experience here. I thought they wouldn't like it because of bum splinters. Apparently not.

New rhetorical question in response to a question whose answer is an emphatic yes: Do cats shit in the bark?

It's wet all the way through.

Guess I'd better get it all out and into the garden. Annoying.

    Why don't you:

1/ Use what you need to now
2/ Find a place to store the remaining either indoors or outdoors under a tarp
3/ On the odd occasion when we get a dry sunny day, rotate the contents with a garden fork - it'll soon dry out and jobs a good un'

Got in touch with Rolawn who confirmed that all their bagged products are stored outside both at their warehouse prior to despatch and in the hauliers before delivery, so it must have been the recent heavy rainfall.

I bought these from them have to buy a decent amount or it's expensive but very good and lasts a long time I have found

    https://www.cpa-horticulture.co.uk/b...e-pine-nuggets

They also do hardwood chips which are good.

Chuck some moth balls on it - cats hate the smell for some reason

I'm not a lover of bark or pea gravel as not only do cats treat it as their litter box but in the case of bark a strong wind can scatter it everywhere. Our neighbors had a bark section next to our drive and half of it ended up next to our bins. They've now switched to slate chippings which seems to be the ground covering du jour and would I assume deter cats from using it as their litter tray and stay put when it's a bit blowy.
