Depends on the grade, and your car
Local Tesco randomly has engine oil offers when it doesn’t usually sell the stuff at all.
The last few years, it’s been Castrol Stop Start. Definitely much cheaper than anywhere else. Think it was £9 for 2 litre bottles.
Anyway, the current offer is Redex. Think it’s £8 for 2 litres of fully synthetic.
Any informed opinions? Thanks.
FFF says it all really
What is the grade and what grade is recommended for your car.
They do one that is said to be compatible with my old BMW diesel. 5W-30 C3.
Question is really whether, as a brand, Redex has a particular reputation - good, bad or indifferent.
I’d bought the Castrol offer previously on the basis it is a well known engine oil brand. Again, it was said to be compatible but whether it’s regarded as “good”, I don't know!!
Europarts are currently offering half priced Castrol oil with a discount code (shown on the site). Unfortunately they are sold out of the type I require
Think LL04 spec is what’s required. That’s what the Castrol I used was.
This looks just the job with 50% off:

Thanks all.
Modern cars hardly use any oil. So you need to replace it ever 10, 15 or 20K. Why trying to cut costs with using something you’re not sure of? It can be an expensive choice.
FFF already wrote about the two main factors. The oil you’re buying is pretty generic. Then there’s the matter of synthetic/non-synthetic.

Depends on the age of the car...I hadn't realised how tempramental modern engines are to particular oil types. I'd only ever put in exactly what the manufacturer recommends now, brand inclusive.

Does seem a minefield now, used to be any 5w-30 (for example) would do. Redex alone sell 4 different types https://www.holtsauto.com/redex/oil/

Put reg number in and work out what you should be using then shop around
Funnily enough, all the garages local to me use QXL from Eurocarparts.
Redex in 2L servings seems strange, new to the market I think? I go to my local factors and check out the special offers on brands I know, sometimes double amounts if really good deals and store for the next oil change.
