    Moscow - any hotel tips?

    Good evening fellas.

Last time I posted asking for recommendations was for a trip to Berlin, and boy, the hotel choice I took after advice from here was superb. Couldn't have asked for better.

I promised my lad a trip to Moscow if he did well in his exams, and he did well, much to the moaning from my wallet. So again, I'm asking my my well travelled members for hotel stops, advice/tips etc. We just want a decent hotel, not too decadent, preferably near the city centre. We're going at the end of February (College half term). We'll fly out of Manchester. He wants to see the usual tourist things, but hopefully, we can get a day to the Kubinka tank museum.

So once again, I'm asking for your advice. All comments will be gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Adam

    Moscow - any hotel tips?

Saw this on Youtube a while ago. Too kitsch?

Been a couple of times, but a long, long time ago in the days of the USSR. Soyuz rocket monument, Red Square in the snow and Soviet era GUM made lasting impressions. Stayed once at the Cosmos Hotel, can’t remember the other time.

The Courtyard looks a good option. Have you stayed there?

I was in two minds over whether to post anything on a thread looking for ideas as I have nothing positive to say but, on the basis it may save you a terrible and expensive trip:

    1. I have been to Moscow twice and found it fairly depressing. Though it was for work.

    2. It will be f******g freezing in February.

I have stayed there a few times in the last 3/4 years it’s decent, beds comfy and clean but a little dated, nice safe area but quite quiet. You can walk to Red Square /Kremlin/ Gum from there

Another worth looking at is the Pentahotel in Arbat, busy area and plenty to see lots of restaurants, Blackstar burger is good. More trendy hotel. There is a good restaurant at the far end of the street but can’t find it on trip advisor.

    Some other ideas

Good place to eat no too expensive and nice views

This place is good to eat in great views of the City

If you want the old Soviet experience try the Sovietsky Hotel, it's a bit tired but an experience. Has the Restaurant Yar attached which has good food and brilliant entertainment.

Same here, along with Kiev and Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg)

Cosmos Hotel food was mostly inedible, we survived using the hotel dollar shop provisions.

Swan Lake Bolshoi ballet fantastic if you can get a ticket, Lenin's mausoleum also but not sure of the visiting arrangements nowadays as during the USSR western visitors were guided to the front of a very long queue, as we also were on any internal flights

Which was just as well as the flights were not only full, the aisles had people standing all flight, with various items of livestock in cages at their feet!

As already mentioned it will be brutally cold at end of Feb..
Moscow is not the easiest to get around given it’s size at the best of times but with that weather it will not be pleasant at all.
I would have a rethink on timing.
