To be more positive, cases are down for the 6th day in a row.

On the flipside, alcohol related liver disease cases have risen dramatically during the lockdowns as have the number of cancers being diagnosed late.

People have become so wrapped up in COVID that they've forgotten that it kills a tiny proportion of the people who die each day.

That sounds completely intuitive of course. Yet my wife worked for several days, sifting through tons of data to find the evidence in cancer drug use in hospital, and then only on a limited number of cancers

Not quite sure what you are saying here but doctors are extremely concerned because the number of referrals for cancer is down massively, so whilst your wife probably meant well, I’ll trust the BMJ and the Lancet

You're absolutely right to trust those reviews. But the information I forwarded is not in contradiction.
Those reviews consider the lack of referrals.
My wife studied the data of cancer drug use in hospitals. In other words, what those doctors witnessed hasn't yet materialised at advanced cancer and palliative hospital treatment level.
The publication is on the way I believe.

Currently sat in Bristol Temple Meads waiting for my train and I’d say there are more people not wearing a mask than are.

I was in Morrisons in Witham earlier today, more not than are.

Though no longer a legal requirement, there government advise wearing masks in certain circumstances.

"We expect and recommend that members of the public continue to wear face coverings in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. For example, on public transport."

There have been a few posters who have said they won't wear a mask now, so I'm wondering, particularly with current high case rates, what their reasons for not wearing one are?

Worn one all day everyday at work, had both jabs, just had Covid, do LFT 2-3 times a week, listen to advise and make educated decision rather than blindly following or being paranoid. High cases yes, admissions to hospital a problem? Currently no so if you want to wear one crack on I wont question your choice or ask you to justify but equally dont analyse or impose your decision on me. When I dont need to I dont bother as I’m not worried about getting it again and take very reasonable precautions to prevent spreading it. Learn to live with it like all the other viruses now.

I hear this argument all the time and as far as I know liver disease caused by alcohol abuse isn't transferable along with any kind of cancer you can mention.

Masks? personally i think most that people are wearing are as about much use as chocolate teapot however went with the dogs for a beach walk no mask ,Tesco’s for fuel pay at pump no mask, M&S food wore a mask and then next door to Aldi again wore a mask out of respect to my fellows as are the majority in my part of the World.

I'm not judging, just trying to understand the reasons people might have for not following the guidance. Seems like in your case you don't feel its likely you'd pass anything on to others, so there's not really a need.

I visited London with my family at weekend for a break to London Zoo etc. I was surprised that the majority were wearing masks. We minimised tube rides but on the central line which was nearly all seats taken, I think everyone seated were wearing masks with the one or two standing were not.

We as a family continued wearing masks. In the enclosed areas in London Zoo, there were signs to wear masks, which the majority did.

In the open areas, we were glad to unmask. But think as a family we have become accustomed to wearing a mask whether in the hotel, tube or walking through Westfield to the parked car. I did not even look for any watch shops.

London Transport has kept a mask policy in place so most people should be wearing them on tubes, trains and buses.

The problem is it isn't really enforced as most services only have a driver, and that's it. Some people do wear a mask for the ticket barriers and then just remove them, so even the enforcement by the staff there has no actual impact on the compliance within the trains themselves.

That being said, enforcing it would be an absolute nightmare for the poor staff having to deal with those not complying.

I find it very hard to believe you would write something like that.

I met a 95 year old WW2 veteran last week his mates where killed at and he nearly died himself at Anzio and Mone Casino.

He gets around on a mobility scooter (which I have helped him with) he has all the zest for life as a teenager,he even carries a litter grab and does what he can to pick up rubbish in the park.
I took him to a outside cafe for tea,his storys where vivid, true and modest,he bluffed and joined at 16 years old.
It was one of the biggest privledges of my life to meet him.

He deserves every last minute of natural life he can get, more I would say that some people.

when people wont wear a mask I ask myself what value these men would have placed on a mask during a mustard gas attack.

But in real life on a packed tube on saturday i'd estimate 70% mask/30% no mask, although the pictures below give the impression that more are masked.

Saturday night was the first time we'd had live music in our club since early March 2020, an absolutely packed basement club in Soho, with no windows, watching a live blues band, everyone dancing around enjoying themselves, no masks to be seen, and it was so enjoyable.

That picture isn't giving me the confidence needed to return to the office in September.

I'll have to buy another motorbike or start cycling in.

You should've seen the tubes on the sunday afternoon of the Euros finals, packed solid, no masks and everyone singing out loudly.. :D

I wore a mask but can't say it worries me that much, i either get it or i don't... i'm sure i'm more statistically in danger when riding my motorbike almost daily, or when skydiving.

You're right but I'd rather take my chances on a bike than bring it back to my mum or in-laws.

My commute is overground only which is typically better than the tube but suboptimal nonetheless.

Am with you 100% here, that doesn’t look encouraging. Our office is moving from KGX to PAD shortly, so will only have the overground to worry about, but the trains are always standing room only anyway, so hoping to see lots of masks about.

So glad I only have a 30-min walk to work (and not going back until next year). No wonder they all look miserable.

Disappointed by some of the prescriptive and critical posts on here. It was made a legal requirement and now it has been made a matter of personal choice and judgement. That's what it is and so no criticism is warranted either way.

I was surprised by the proportion still wearing masks last Monday but have noticed some who were doing so last week, not doing so this week. I'm talking about retail staff predominantly.

Personally I'm making a decision purely on the basis of the circumstances. Am I qualified to do that? Probably not, but the powers that be have given me that right and I'll take advantage of it.

Its very simple you dont wear a mask to protect yourself you wear it to protect others.

Thats why people have an oppinion on non mask wearing and judge people who dont, fear also comes into it.

I bought a good one with replaceable filters it wasnt expensive,I cant breath very well I am wearing mine.

I'm waiting for companies to estimate and share the drop in their carbon footprint due to employees staying at home. Hopefully it gets fashionable and a bandwagon begins.

I'm reading our corporate responsibility newsletter now. We've signed a climate pledge to become net zero. I wonder if commutes could be put against that.

Am certain they will all apply the CSR spin on the environment to their advantage, would be foolish not to. We physically cannot hold all staff in the office now, down to 1/3 max.

Older chaps are having a meltdown about the new way of working / not sitting at a designated desk. Doing our best to bring them onboard, they managed the last 18 months.

Went to Oakwood Theme Park on Tuesday for my boys 10th birthday.
I didn’t see a single person wearing a mask. Not even elderly people.
People just don’t want to wear them anymore and that visit is proof of that.
Remember here in Wales it’s still a requirement on public transport and in shops and yet, the first chance people get to lose the mask, they jump at it.

  35. #185
We went to tesco yesterday and were without doubt in the minority, no one under 30 was wearing masks at all, my guess was about 20% in total wearing masks.

I'm off to Cyprus next week and had to buy some FFP2 masks for the airport/flight.

I don't really see it being a hardship (I'll report back after the flight) to exchange wearing a mask on the flight for a chance for a short holiday (I've had it booked for over 18 months and moved 3 times already), but equally, I find them unpleasant and uncomfortable to wear, positively restrictive - Not so long ago, before the masks in shops rule was lifted I had to leave a garden centre on a particularly hot day as I was becoming short of breath and overly hot.

As the rules don't demand masks anymore, I don't consider that level of discomfort acceptable.

That said, on a recent trip to London I wore a mask on the Underground - A large proportion of people weren't...

A bit like religion, I don't have a problem with people who favour them, but I do take a dislike to people who insist only their way is right.
