It'll take a bit of time but newer versions of Photoshop can remove it using the "Content Aware Fill" function.

I took the attached photo of Lewis Hamilton passing the finish line at this weekend's F1 race. Unfortunately the photo is rather spoilt by the mesh fence. Is there any wizz photo manipulation algorithms that can reduce / remove this?

I do high end retouch work for a living, I see about 4-6 hours work to do that properly. (£200-£300) probably better off buying an image from one of the professionals who were at the race.
You could get one of the retouch outfits in Bangladesh/India to do it for $50 but there’s no guarantee of decent results. I use them for pathing/cut-outs but always have to take time to finesse the paths to get a decent mask.
Edit: content aware fill looks great in the YouTube demo but is not up to the job on anything remotely complex or detailed, often younspend more time making what it’s done acceptable than it would take to do the work using other tools.

Agree with you there,
Working in 3D, I do alot of texture work and while you get can get an okayish result reusing content aware, the post-fill clean up, and imprecision can make it a pain.
Personally it's something i'd approach by manually painting over the image using texture brushes, pattern fills combined with layered local clones.
looks like a fun distraction, might give it a shot tomorrow, when i'm back at the Cintiq.
Thanks all - as I anticipated it is not trivial. I'll keep it as is as a momento of a great day!
This reminds me of times gone by when fences and motor racing are mentioned. I always remember seeing the signs "Motor racing is dangerous"!

In my times spectating, I have seen several "accidents" to the crowd via bits flying through the air. Only one led to a fatality thankfully.
Unpopular opinion but IMO it looks great as is.
Clouds aren’t great, and i could probably touch up the people better, but i’ve got a migraine coming so called it quits for today
Excellent work there ... I was going to suggest putting the job on Fiverr for a £20 gig I bet that would get a decent result.
Wow, that is very good indeed for a quick job! Well done Endo! (Just noticed that endo is an anagram of done).
I would not achieve that level, even without the migraine.
For these kinda things look on people per hour normally find good people on there for photo shopping for cheap prices

Great job. Expect a few PMs asking if you can Photoshop a jawline into a LinkedIn profile pic or remove a second chin.
Really well done, superb result. I use a similar function in the GIMP sometimes to remove litter from outdoor photos and similar trivial tasks, but that's proper talented.
Endo what a great gesture in enhancing and preserving the OP’s original and special photo. Its actions like this and the top up of the fundraiser that make me proud to be a member on here.

What amazing work and results…..
The TZ spirit is still alive and well….
I’m gobsmacked by that edit. I had no idea such a thing could be done so well.
Fantastic job and fantastic gesture.

Agreed, fantastic work!
Brilliant edit, I do photo editing most days but do little remove/mask type work, when I do it’s a ball ache so top respect for removing that fence.
Cheers guys, it's a fun break from the usual PS/3ds work i do.
Downside is, fresh eyes this morning and I've found a billion things that need fixed lol.
You're a star, nice one
Could be worse, pm's after something for their tinder/grinder profile.
Content-aware scale would lead to some hilariously "tiny" results.
I’m pretty good in photoshop but that made me sweat so that result is stunning as far as I’m concerned! Nice one Endo!
