    Critical thinking

It's important that we figure out a theory of everything that aligns quantum theory and general relativity.

We should also work out a way to work together to remove suffering from the world and ensure we look after our planet.

It might take us a little while to do that, so in the interim, I'd be grateful if you could let me know if it's acceptable for a middle-aged man to throw shapes to 80s and 90s music in the kitchen while making breakfast. My children think not.

Yours are lucky, I was bawling along to sea shanties as I fried stuff this morning.

If there was 80s and 90s music playing in the kitchen while making breakfast then it is perfectly acceptable to be throwing shapes.

If there was no music playing then it's questionable.

My kids would expect nothing less from me and I’m often found singing and dancing around the house.

I save the best moves for when they bring friends round

I’m guessing the kids are at early double digits. My single digit kids find anything like that hilarious and my friends’ kids in their teens wouldn’t notice if you didn’t do it on their phones.

In any case I thought one if the most important things in parenting was to do things that your kids find embarrassing.

According to a documentary series I accidentally watched on Netflix, throwing shapes is in fact the key to everything. It was called "The OA", but perhaps it should have been... The AO?

    ^Phew. Thanks all.

    Glad I'm not alone.

    Yes, early double digits.

Yes, with music. Lockdown hasn't affected me that badly. Yet.

Like the idea of saving some of the smoothest moves for when friends are around.

    Interesting idea, TT.

    "Just stop."

    "What?"

    "That. What you're doing."

    "What, this?"

*slides towards toaster rhythmically and catches the slices a la Morecambe & Wise*

    "Yes. That."

"You mean, you don't want me to do... this?"

*flurry of limbs like a frog wrestling an octopus*

    "Yes."

    "Ok."

    *slides back to the sink*

    ^Excellent.

Farahs, vest, white socks and slip-ons.

A phenomenal combination that can only be improved by Blue Stratos Hai Karate Insignia Brut Denim Tabac Kouros.

^Of course. Usual attire - silk jacket, plus fours and espadrilles.

I darent even try, I’d probably put my back out!

I make up for it by singing (badly) all the words wrong.

That seems to do the trick too.

I sing all the right words, but not necessarily in the right order.

I suspect you're unconsciously channelling Hugh Dennis's 'Embarassing Dad' character from the early-1990s TV show, 'The Mary Whitehouse Experience', whose catchphrase was, 'That's got a good beat!'.

Difficult to spot any decent video to link to, sorry.

I found this the other day. It's an interesting mix of rag time and shanty.

I must try affecting some accents too.

    I'll look that up, thanks.

I found this while searching. Extra marks for socks pulled up and matching front pack. This chap knows how to party.

One of my favourite quotes. Reminds me of the Amadeus quote. Too many notes.

That is similar to a student kitchen I once had!

My kitchen is now more like this.

Well to be fair the 80's music was the best and most diverse of any decade IMHO?? New Romantic, Acid Jazz, House, Disco, Punk, Progressive Rock, Heavy Metal.. the list goes on :)

You didn't think about placing a carboard sheet on the floor and throwing a bit of breakdancing??

That always gives me 'the goosebumps' and reminds me of some fantastic nights out in my younger days. Even at my current advanced years I still try to get so somewhere 'lasers can be reached for' a couple of times a year, just to absorb the atmosphere even if i'm sat in a corner. Well until the recent unpleasantness that is.

If I tell our kids that I've hurt my arm in two places one of them will invariably tell me not to go to those places, or if an ambulance goes by with sirens blaring they will announce that he'll never sell any ice-cream going at that speed. Few things delight me more.

Reminds me of the classic joke:
My daughter said she had won the Leslie Nielsen award at school yesterday.
    "What is that?" I asked
"It's a big building full of kids" was her answer.

I need to dance like a twat to my old (house) music in the kitchen on a Saturday morning , so that my kids have a chance to realise what proper music sounds like.
If they object, they get Radiohead or Pink Floyd instead. Yes, see how that worked out.

It's my kitchen, my speaker, my electricity and I am actually this disillusioned.

Also, I was a forking good dancer back then (1993) and as far as I can tell I haven't lost it.

Cheers for the 808 State video, that is quality
