    Is this a slow worm?

My next door neighbour rang my doorbell, and rather breathlessly informed me that her cat and mine had been playing with an adder in her garden, and had killed it.

I felt it unlikely that there would be an adder in an urban garden, and if there was that the cats winning was a rather unlikely outcome, so I asked if they had a picture. This is what was sent, and I could see it was a grass snake. It's a shame that no one told the cats that grass snakes are a protected species.

Not a slow worm, they are very bland single colour with a more rounded head. someone will be along in a moment to inform us that a slow worm is not a snake but a legelss lizard.

This looks to me like like an adder, but could be a grass snake, can you get a pic of his head?

    Sad to see that pic.

Cats are great destroyers of wild creatures/songbirds unfortunately.
    Cheers,

    Slow worm

I seem to remember when handling a grass snake as a kid they used to give of a pungent smell that hung around your hand.

Nice pics, never seen an adder that dark before - that would get me doing a double take.

I hadn’t seen one that dark before but apparently they are quite common.

And they tend to have owners who display a staggering sense of self entitlement -

    1. My little shit-machine is allowed to deposit its little gifts in everyone else’s garden, as well as terrorising wildlife.
    2. If while at large it runs under the wheels of a vehicle then clearly all drivers are illegitimate speed merchants.

Unpopular opinion: cats and dogs are an environmental disaster. We simply shouldn't have them as the scale we do.

Don’t forget the deliberately ignorant ones that claim that their darling does not poo in other people’s gardens, it only does in their litter tray. Or their little darling does not catch wildlife as it is well fed.
