    Personalised plate question

This came up recently while sorting out Wills and LPAs. If you own a vehicle with a personalised plate and it gets stolen or written off can you get the plate back, or does the insurer who pays out take title to it? Thanks

I believe that, before payout by the insurance company, you can put it on retention.

Once the insurance company has paid out and taken ownership of the vehicle then they have the right to do as they wish with it.

No one owns a personalised plate, they just buy the right to put it on a vehicle.

As above...from DVLA website...Apply to keep your private (personalised) registration number as soon as your vehicle is stolen.

    Also same if written off.

That's good to know - I thought that by purchasing the plate you retained ownership unless you'd allowed the retention certificate to lapse or sold it with a vehicle.

Sold it with a vehicle is key there - if the insurance company pay out for a full loss, you’ve essentially sold it to them along with the plate.
