Thread: Anybody good with timber, and treating it?

Anybody good with timber, and treating it?

Looking for some help in regards to treating wood.

we had a couple of lovely gates made a few years ago out of slatted Iroko wood, it’s now looking a bit tired and needs a nick of varnish.

the carpenter left me a full tin, but I’m reluctant to just paint it as it’s marked, would it be wise to lightly sand and varnish again?

    cheers

Always sand it back before varnishing

As above. Sand it back to remove marks and to provide a key for the new varnish. Use progressively finer grades of sandpaper depending on the condition currently.
Clean it all off with white spirit if needed.
    Then varnish.
You could also sand with a fine grade between coats if wanted.

As above, sand first but I wouldn’t use varnish. I’d use a good quality oil like Osmo

Osmo is the nuts…. Not cheap, but, amazing stuff

And yep…. Just did my teak table…. Random orbital sander with a fairly light grade, just paired it back enough to apply the oil

Came up a treat and then, 2 days later one of the labourers dropped a cast iron post on it and smashed one end !

Perhaps consider Yacht varnish, we recently had a painter do some work and he finished some Timber doors with it. Four coats and they look stunning, I expect it would last for years on your gates given its marine origins.

I second the use of Osmo. We had 4 new double gates (Iroko) installed in 2019 and I gave them a good coat of Osmo in 2020 and they looked great but need doing again already.

Thanks for info, can anyone recommend a cheap(ish) sander for the job?

I picked up a random branded one on Amazon…. Don’t pay for anything posh…

Do get one with variable speed…. Important when you want to tread a little lighter…

    I don’t think I spent much more than £30 or £40…?
