    Home Cholesterol Tests

Can anyone recommend a home cholesterol test, are they reasonably accurate?

Don't want one which relies on judging the colour of a test strip.

You can probably get one for free at your GP's.

Yes, just had one but would like more regular ones, say 6 monthly. Perhaps pointless though.

Get one from your GP while at it ask for a full range of tests to be carried out, full MOT.

5.92. Haven't had consultation yet but, looking at past figures, it's creeping back up again after being put on (low dose) Atorvastatin. Realise reading is not especially high but if GP won't increase dose want to monitor more regularly rather than every year or two.

Edit - Haven't actually been told the results yet but they are available on the NHS app which is certainly worth installing.

I am on 20mg Atorvastatin and it keeps me under 5. My understanding is that it is basically a life long treatment.

Just been advised mine is 5.39 and I may benefit from a statin. I’m going to try and reduce it “naturally” first as lockdown has probably caused a bit of an increase. Just joining a gym after not going for last 15 mths and my diet is pretty good anyway, a bit OTT on alcohol though!
They’ve said have a test again in 12 mths but I too was going to try a home one in six months to see if what I’m doing is making a difference.

I've used Medichecks for other tests but the Clorestorol one isn't a home test as such - you have to send the sample away.

I speed walk (cannot run because of a bad knee) for at least 6 km every day (usually in an hour), cycle to town every time I need to go there (including shopping) so that's another 22/25 kms) and swim 3 times a week (front crawl, sessions are 40 minutes at the moment so I only manage about a mile each time).
We cook everything ourselves, including loads of vegetable. All this to say that reducing "naturally" is certainly no guarantee: Your fitness will improve, but for your cholesterol I wouldn't hold my breath.
We all take our chances but I am happy to have statins

My good cholesterol is high & my bad has always been very high.
I got sent to lipid clinic for tests & conclusion was, healthy diet, moderate exercise, slightly too much booze.
The specialist told me basically it boils down to genetics, I have one bad gene group 2.
    Three categories,
1, Two good genes you can basically eat anything & still stay below 4.5
2, One bad gene & you will be up to 8 & control with statins.
3, Two bad genes basically screwed.

Mine got into the high 8’s until the lipid clinic put me on 10mg Ezetimibe & 5mg Rosuvastatin, now low 4’s.

Thanks for your view- I know that trying to reduce naturally isn’t a guarantee but thought I’d give it a try first. I do already walk 4 to 6 miles a day, porridge each morning, 5-7 portions of fruit and veg and very little processed food (maybe a take away every two weeks. It wasn’t over 5 two years ago so I’m hoping that restarting the gym and some plant sterols will get me below 5. If not then I guess it will statins

It's important to remember the absolute number is not the only important thing. Lipids are only part of your overall cardiac risk- better to speak to your GP about Qrisk scores and whether statins would provide good benefit for you.
