Thread: Any mechanics on the forum?

    Any mechanics on the forum?

Not sure if I’ll get an answer to this but thought I’d check the forum’s extensive knowledge on all things :-).

Does anyone know what minor defect on a MOT test would have the reference:

    “mi taply 82%”.

My Google Fu is coming up short!

    Thank you!

Yeh Taply is a decelerometer used to checked braking effort....id imagine it’s your service brake efficiency, however I have no idea why they’d advise if it was 82%
It could simply be a note to say they used it rather than the rolling road

Thank you! Forum knowledge wins again. It was noted under the minor defects section in a past test certificate of a car that I’ve bought. At least I now know what to look out for.

    Thanks again!

if it is a 4x4 that might be why they used the Tapley meter

Orr something they couldn't get on the rollers because it was, say, too low e.g. a Lotus 7, Morgan 3 wheeler etc.

I'd guess that means the brakes generated a force of 82% of a g (gravity), i.e. roughly 8m/s/s or roughly 18mph per second. That sounds pretty good to me.

Any garage worth their salt would go through each one with you and advise about it also

Thanks for all the replies. Just seeing the rest now.

I found the previous MOT certificate in a car that I just bought and was interested to know what it meant. I’m in NI so our MOTs aren’t done by independent garages. Have to go to official MOT centres. The car is a Honda CRZ. Not particularly low but lower than a lot of cars so the above suggestion could well make sense.

    Thanks again.
