What knife to take to a holiday rental?

Kitchen knives in holiday rentals are always so terrible. They look similar to real knives but are incapable of slicing a tomato.

I don't want to pack my Global knife block so I'm looking for recommendations for a decent knife that I can pack and carry easily.

This forum has never let me down yet.

I suppose it depends on how much cooking you plan to do… holidays for me mean no cooking, go out to eat, or get the help to do it for you, let someone else do all the hard work.
I have to be honest is not something that has ever crossed my mind.
Blunt knife = sharpen it on the bottom of a cup.
If cooking on a Braai use a pen / pocket knife

when you get there just goto a local shop and buy a cheap sharp knife , leave it there when you leave.

If you have decent knives at home, bring them with you. I do so occasionally, but mostly I'll take a variety of folders that I bought for holiday kitchen purposes. Always good to have a reason to buy more knives in tasty steels and formats (like the Spyderco Spydiechef).

Taking them to where you're staying should be perfectly OK, as they're kitchen knives the OP's intending to use in the rental's kitchen.

Victorinox and Opinel also make extremely good kitchen knives for a small budget, plenty good enough to make you want to bring them back from your holidays.

Buy an "oil stone " and sharpen the blunt instruments there.

Probably best to never go anywhere and just stay at home with all the kitchen knives close at hand and the required sharpening device.

I tend to simply pop down to the local Tesco. Even a cheap knife from there is passable for a fortnight. I also buy a non-stick frying pan.

I can muster through with everything else.

Thinking about this a bit more (bake off is on) surely one of the cheap ceramic knives from TK Max would be perfect?
The usually come with a protective case, they don’t need sharpening and they are cheap. If I had your dilemma that’s what I would look for.

When I lived away from home during week in a flat, I bought Wusthofs budget Gourmet chefs knife, which was less than half the price of their traditional Classic range. It’s now my favourite chefs knife as I got used to the lighter weight, and is doing a stellar job to this day. Transporting it is easy - wrap in a tea towel, chuck in a box or case, jobs a good un.

Not as long as I normally use but fine for holiday, very sharp and the sheath makes packing it a non event.

And which colour, the cheapest of course, and a bright one might help you not leave it behind.

I do it every year in France - go to the local hardware store and buy a set for €10 or whatever and they do the job for two weeks. Leave them when we go.

Victorinox £9. Very good for toms and soft fruit. I always take a small cast iron frying pan, bread knife and a small straight bladed knife. Quality of items in rental houses has improved over the years IMO. Owners don't like neg reviews.

When we go on extended family short breaks at Center Parcs I like to spend a day in the lodge cooking amazing food for everyone while they are all doing energetic stuff. For me that is as relaxing as it gets. Each to their own!

I am much the same and love actually having more time to cook, plus I enjoy feeding people, but would not enjoy doing so without a decent knife.
I just take my Global chef's knife with me to whatever cottage I am staying in.

It would seem TK MAXX no longer stock kitchen knives, goodness only knows where the stock went, maybe to bored schoolkids to help with their various hobbies??
