    Dial variance

I’ve been idly struck that in some photos of CWC watches, the dive dials look ‘busy’ in the way of Luminox dials, with bright white lines everywhere, competing for your eye and, in others, they don’t.

    Eg:

I’ve come to realise that the effect is due to thickness of the minute markings varying between dials.

Sometimes fine, retiring and ‘uncluttering’, sometimes thick, in your face and ‘busy-making’:

Anyone noticed whether this thinning and fattening correlates with anything or is random from batch to batch?

(In my pics, fat-minutes seem to be a feature of date window dials, and thin-minutes of no date)

Fat minutes / thin minutes? CWC Diver dial variance

I think the photos don’t help.
In the metal there is a difference but it’s not as apparent as in some of the photos.
The more modern L dialled versions do tend to have a thicker minute track print.
The modern SBS seems to be the worst culprit for this, I noticed a chap on the tube with one yesterday and it did seem a lot busier than my earlier version.

I must say, I much prefer the “thin” indice dials.
They look cleaner and less cluttered.
(says he with a ‘17 issued “thick” SBS)

Struck by how legible this original is - fine minute markers and devoid of visual ‘busy-ness’ - wildly different to the busy-ness of the reissue I posted earlier

Hang on a minute (see what I did there)
    Where did that come from.
Looks to be in very good condition, as does the 82 chrono.

Matt, the tritium on the SBS is awfully green...
    A redial, surely?

John, didn’t leap out at me, but I can see what you mean. Just a photo quirk?

What year is that one? Mine's an '04 but looking at the above pics I can't decide if my minute markers are thin or thick? About same as the one I quoted I think.

That colour is typical for the 88 SBS.

    Every day’s a school day.
Doesn’t seem to have aged at all.

Just looking again at the three comparison pictures,
I’ve just noticed that the thin minutes dial has a thick 9
Whereas the medium and thick dials have thinner 9
The medium seems to have an even thinner 9

    Never noticed it before
