    Best cheap case back opener?

As per title, I need to change the battery on my 7a38 so looking for the best tool for the job without spending £100s on a Bergeon or similar.

Any recommendations? Are the cheap fleabay OK for a once-every-five-years job?

    Cheers in advance

I only tried the cheap flee bay ones and they slip and scratch the hell out the back and was impossible to repair.

I threw it in the bin.

    That was my experience anyway.

I have a couple of the cheaper versions
They are good for cheaper watches I would not use them on a more expensive watch
The 3 prong adjustable versions are the best as they come with changeable fittings to best fit the case back
These reduces the chance of slippage.
I also have the smaller 2 prong version which is easier and quicker to use but you can’t change the fittings and the points are quite thin, this leads to a bit more movement around the case back when using it.
The wooden handle version is next to useless as are the cheap balls.

    All were under £15

Not sure if he's still knocking them out, but get yourself one of Bry1975's (Togman on eBay) 7Axx case-back tools.

    Simply the best.

I have a couple - one for my Seiko 7A38's and another for Yema N8's (much smaller PCD). I treated them to cheap knurled ally handles:

Thanks for the replies fellas. A 3-prong it is then as I have a couple of others that aren't 7a38 that will need doing in the near future.

Funny thing is, I was sure I had a 3-prong tool but I've turned the little watch tool cupboard upside down and it's nowhere to be seen?

I’ll second Bry’s case back tool, I would like to say Seiko screw down backs have a common size and pattern, I’ve found that the one I have fits lots of different Seikos, from divers to 5s, I don’t have a 7a to compare to that though.
    Cheers..

    Hi,

My 6 pin case opener works well with 7a38 casebacks.

    Regards

Combine it with a small watch vice for even more security.

Not strictly true, Jason. I have a couple of 7T32's with a slightly bigger PCD, where I have to resort to using my old Jaxa clone 3-prong.

Good to know, I guess I’ve been lucky so far.

Am I the only one here who simply uses a ball of blu-tack? (If this is below the standards of this fine forum, let me know and I'll stop straight away.)

It works really well, as does a ball of parcel tape.

There’s also the rubber balls which work well if the back wasn’t fitted by a gorilla.
