Thanks. It is indeed shot from my front balcony, a couple of dramatic days around here, luckily not so much for me but a couple of friends had their houses flooded.

    It's reverting to normal now.

Yeah I was being sneaky, it's the Tate Modern again. Claude Monet and Mark Rothko display.

Are you guys using google image back search or some geosearch stuff to identify locations?

I would hope not. It's not much of a thread if that's all you do.

Certainly not my technique. Sometimes I know them straight off but more usually there's an element of local knowledge and then narrowing down the options through things like architectural style, geology, or some awareness of the travels of the poster. I don't search by using the posted image, but do search images using key words. I find online satellite images most useful for proving a suspicion, and Google Street View is handy too.

There are often enough clues to work out a location but I'm currently stumped by that one that looks like some sort of chateau near water posted by Mitch.

Following that, I've discovered that it is very easy to crack my most recent contribution via a Google 'Search by image'. I would encourage participants to first give those a chance to respond who may have actually been there (paging Carlton-Browne).

    If it was that easy.

Try if you can solve them by using that. You won't.

Have a feeling I’ve been there about 15 years ago but it was on the way back from the Dordogne and can’t remember where it was and don’t appear to have any saved photos.

Bingo, it's the Grand Reception Room of the George Gilbert Scott designed Locarno Suite in the rebranded FCDO.

    Thank you.

Really struggled with this one, I think I have looked at a thousand images of a castle with an octagonal tower with pointed roof.

There’s nearly always some kind of clue in the picture. On the river one it’s reasonable to think the Thames as the poster writes London as his location, then based on the shadows it’s obviously close to being a North/South stretch, and the width probably means west of central London. Pretty easy to find on a satellite image with trees on one bank and buildings on the other.
