My toaster lives under a wall cabinet, at the back of the worktop. When I want to use the toaster, I move it to the front of the worktop, because I don't want to 'cook' the cupboard above. The cupboard contains cooking oils and salt / pepper. She tells me I'm being silly. Am I?

Likewise. It's surprising how hot a toaster gets and a kettle sitting directly underneath a cupboard is is a device for wrecking the cabinet !!

My toaster didn't damage the cupboard through heat, however when the (clockwork) timer failed the bottom of the cupboard was coated with sticky smoke residue and was impregnated with burnt toast fumes that took a long while to get rid of.
So even if the toaster doesn't directly cook the cupboard contents there is still good damage potential there.
I still use the grill for toast, no worries about bread size not being right and easy to get exactly right - unless I forget about it.
I'm in the market for a new toaster, any recommendations? but please no niche hipster toasters that cost the same as my entire kitchen and go with the same expensive coffee grinder..

Seems well put together, and the crumb tray is actually positioned in such a way that the crumbs go into it, which is a novelty. As for the “faster toasting” technology, well I suppose it is pretty quick. I use 2 on the scale. 3 will result in smoke. I haven’t dared try 5 - full carbonisation and a fire, I suspect.
Like a lot of items on Ebay, even when the reviews are mostly excellent, there is always a worrying number of 1 star reviews to screw things up. Many of the bad reviews for toasters refer to uneven toasting. I suspect this is because people unbox it, fling a slice of bread in it, and report what happens. But the instructions are pretty clear than you need to let it run with no bread in it a few times before the elements even out - this is very noticeable on this toaster, as you can clearly see on the first few uses that all the heat is at the centre. After a few empty runs, you can easily see it levelling out.
I too went with a Dualit last year, love the single side toast function, although I didn't get the the long version and she moans that on some loaves one end needs trimmed, woman!
Toaster when in use sits on the edge of the worktop and the kettle sits in free air, steam knackers kitchen units.
Dualit....made in UK, reliable, repairable, best option IMO.

Not mentioned in here also is the ability for many toasters to make crap tasting toast. Dualit for me. Still have 2 spare elements in case of burn out.

I've got the standard chrome finish and a quick wipe over with a microfibre brings it back nicely. The ends are brushed aluminium so don't show the marks so much

Have to agree with this.
We have had the 4-slot version for a few years, and I'd advise anybody thinking of getting one to think again.
- The toast it produces is very uneven
- On two occasions the timer has stuck (which is a safety issue, as the toaster stays on). One was replaced under warranty, the other we had to pay for
- I've replaced a few elements over the years, but I could have bought a whole new toaster for less than the cost of one element
- Replacing the element requires the use of a very non-standard spanner
- Usability is not great
We were given our Dualit as a wedding present 20 years ago. Nothing has gone wrong with it, it just works.

Stayed in a holiday cottage , lovely kitchen units. Kettle under the wall units, all the plastic peeling off at the edges. In a word Toasters / kettles need free space

+1 for this. Aga toast in the wire rack cannot be beaten, plus in regards to kettles, a stove top Aga kettle will maybe take 60 seconds longer to boil but will outlive us all. I love an Oil Fired Aga; except in the summer when it is like having a 3KW radiator in the kitchen; then it is hell.We do our toast on the Aga - no issues.
I've always found the cheaper De'Longhi models always toast well.
My girlfriend recently bought a Kitchenaid kettle and toaster. They're good but I'm not sure you need to spend that much on them.
Nice toasters and 5 year warranty!
But can you get near the Aga in the winter without moving a dog or two
