How peculiar! Wouldn't a 1990s one be potentially more interesting to people anyway? At that age neither are exactly nearly new.
....check he's not a scoundrel trying to make one sold in 1990 look nine years younger !
L case number, N clasp code ? Pfffft, amateur !

Seen it many times. It's on a par with those customers pawning a locket who put leaden putty or a pound coin behind grandma's sweet fizzog so that it weighs more when we put it on the scales.......
I wouldn't say that a 1990 Day-Date is any more interesting than a 1999 example, but its condition would typically be worse and there may be a small premium for the newer watch even if all else were equal.
The errant hand, of course, is usually that of someone trying to misrepresent their position in the hope of gain.

I do like your thread titles - it's like a pastiche of those American crime report voice-overs.
Shoddy work - colouring, smudges and style. Good detective work Mr. H (olmes). [Onto the next less-suspecting victim perhaps?]
Me thinks an 8 would have been the better choice given the picture.
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
That takes me back. Was that slogan from Impulse or Milk Tray?

You are seeing it somewhat enlarged, whereas in real life the figure is just millimetres high and the shape of the "naughty nine" mirrors those written by the original hand in front of it.
I've seen many variants.
1 becomes 4, 7 or 9.
3 becomes 8 or 9.
Strangely, if confronted, the bearer always expresses amazement at how it could have happened...."but how much will you give me anyway?"

Was the watch itself legit? (If you even got that far!)
I would like to propose a weekly thread were Haywood updates us with the watch related shenanigans and strange happenings that cross his path.
If you ever compile the stories into a book Haywood, I would like a signed copy please :-).
Interesting!
Are you allowed to give out the name of your website here so I can look at your stock and see if there’s anything that takes my fancy? If not can you PM me the details..?
Cheers
