Video: restoration of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date

I stumbled across this on YouTube after watching Mick P’s posted clip on the new 36mm Explorer. It’s a very nice restoration video…I found it quite relaxing to watch!

That's some great work. Quite a long video so a top tip is to play it x2 speed.

Wondering why people with no interest in watches are on a watch forum?

Is it just me or do his weird finger condoms give anyone else the creeps?

I never appreciated how many different specific tools were needed to dismantle and assemble a mechanical watch. Even the bespoke baton polishing tool. Shows where our money goes when we trust our watches to forum specialists for servicing.

Yeah I thought that - very satisfying when they pick from the set of case back tools, or mainspring winders.

Though when they started by replacing the bracelet, then replacing the glass for a moment I wondered when the restoration would start.

Nice, makes service prices seem a bargain.

That’s a mesmerising piece of video, and truly amazing the precision and care taken.

That is an amazing collection of all the different tools required to do the job properly.

How satisfying to see the watch whole, completed, and restored again.

It reminds me why I continue to be in awe of the skill and patience of these craftsmen and women, both on and off the forum.

    Thanks for sharing!

Those little finger stalls in black gave me the creeps. But was gob smacked by the 19800 that’s the same as a Vostok

    That's wonderful to see.
I got rather anxious as the movement was taken apart-I worry when I take the wires out of a plug in case I put them back in the wrong order, so that job is definitely not for me!

I largely enjoyed that but was annoyed when he didn't try to do anything with the bracelet - I was expecting him to pull the links apart and start rebuilding it. I also wonder how much bodged home-polishing is going to ensue - he makes it look easy and I don't believe that it is (but nevertheless, in the same situation, I'd be looking for a proper re-lapping).
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Exactly what I thought, think what they do on a car for the same money!

Very calming too, mindfulness for WIS?

watched few of these restoration videos and still don't understand why those watches were abused in such way..did their owners know that they're Rolex not Seiko?
