SPAM calls - what happens when you ...

what happens when you denote an incoming call as spam ? specifically (just out of curiosity) from the perspective of the caller if and when they try to call again ...

job hunting on a couple of occasions over the last few years (and more recently) i have put a contact number on my CV
    - which then gets published on the interweb. subsequent spam calls i flag up as such. not a big deal from my perspective, but was just wondering what the spammer would experience should they repeat the call.

    thoughts ?

How do you denote a call as spam?

We used BTs 1572 option. It took about a month of constantly listing numbers but they eventually tailed off.

referring to incoming calls on a mobile (not that we use a landline anymore, does anyone ?)

by denote i mean you have the option of marking a inbound number as spam and so blocking calls from it it future.

My phone IDs the call as spam and you can confirm it afterwards. If the spamer calls again, he/she will just get a "This number is not currently available" message

I think it varies from network to network. I think Vodafone, if you block a number you can choose for calls to be sent straight to voicemail or to just not connect.

    Not sure about other networks.

You could do an experiment with a friend. Block his number on your phone and then use his to call your number.

How does it do this, voice recognition?

I'm not sure but it gets it right. When it gets such a number it "says suspected spam" and it never failed. It's probably the same principle as an email spam filter.

the incoming call is coming from a number - all incoming call numbers would be compared to any number placed on the spam list. for a spam filter to be useful the call must be flagged up as spam before the person receiving picks up.

voice recognition requires surprisingly large amounts of computing power - so isn't going to happen on a mobile phone.

This, massively reduced spam calls for us and easy to use as per the testament of my 86 year old mother.

I ask them to hold and then go to the fire alarm. Give them a blast and they never seem to ring back.

Similarly I keep an aerosol air horn handy. Probably doesn't do my phone handset's mike a lot of good, but ...

I'm with EE, don't think they offer such a service.

We bought my wife’s parents a ‘true call’ device.
Now the only calls they receive are from known numbers & friends & family.
