    Headphone repair

    Hi

Here’s a test for the TZ hive mind:

My son’s pride and joy Beats headphones are broken at the hinge so they no longer stay in the right shape. I did manage to superglue the parts and they folded in ok but when he flexed them outwards to put on his head they broke again in the same place.

Any idea if they can be repaired as a DIY job or a good place to send them to for repair?

You need a plastic glue with a bit of flex

Try a specialist 2-part glue? Or maybe contact Apple as they are effectively an Apple product

Thanks. Any recommendations re the glues?

Id probably just use Gorilla glue

Don't suppose you can identify the plastic? I have seen some recommendations recently for methyl methacrylate (MMA) glues for structural plastic repair, something like this https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Versachem...s%2A=0&ie=UTF8 although I have not tried these myself. I find epoxy and super glue often fail on my structural plastic repair attempts.

Was about to post the same, has been the only thing that worked for me previously. The dismay of it breaking in the same place over & over does get rather depressing.

Always the same with Beats. Been like that since they came out.

Use an activator with the superglue, it will work

I have no idea how much area you have to play with, but I have successfully rejoined a snapped arm on a pair of sunglasses by drilling either side of the break and inserting a metal pin prior to gluing (the pin prevents too much flex).
It obviously needs care to ensure that the holes are aligned correctly.
This probably isn’t viable for your scenario, but figured it was worth mentioning just in case.

    Eye watering prices!

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/beat...ervice/pricing

But I suppose it will be a proper job!

    Then there's places like this:

    https://fixheadphones.co.uk/

    https://uk.electronic.partners/services/beats/

No practical experience to share, I'm afriad.

More expensive than buying a new pair.

Thanks all. I think that a glue repair by me will just fail again because of where it is. Though I will have another look.

The 3rd party repair cos linked look quite good - definitely will explore further. The Apple prices look outrageous! But you get the certainty that it’s done properly etc.

I’ll try and post up a picture tomorrow when I have some decent light. There’s not much surface area to play with.

    Cheers

An email to a manufacturer can sometimes yield surprising results. A while ago some books fell from a bookcase (wife's fault!) and one hit my keyboard, snapping a little fold out foot which angled the back up. I did a sort of repair, but emailed Logitech to as k if it was possible to obtain another foot, just a plastic snap in jobby. To my surprise and delight they sent me a new keyboard FOC, from Holland! Always worth asking.

Hope the OP doesn't mind - year's ago I bought her in doors a pair of enclosed ear headphones, as time has passed the faux leather that the ear cup's are covered with has deteriorated, she doesn't want new headphones but I'd like to have them "made good", any clues, advice welcome.

I have some Bose headphones and found replacement ear cushions on Ebay, if you haven't already, may be worth a look.

Don’t mind at all. Looking through the 3rd party links in the thread and they might be able to help with your wife’s headphones too. They seem to offer all kinds of repairs to all sorts of things. Worth asking.

I sourced replacement ear pads for my wife's Bose QC on Amazon
