    Rolex Explorer 36mm - Ref 124270

Here is a Youtube clip from Bark and Jack about the new 36mm Explorer. The man is a definite fan of the 36mm models but he admits that the new model is the one to have.

    Please enjoy.

It will be interesting to see how it wears with the increased taper,

I went to pick up the gold steel version last week and turned it down. I was wearing my 126231 at the time and thought it looked and felt much smaller.

    I'll stick with the 114270

And the two-tone version is just weird:

Perfect Rolex case size! Not sure about bracelet though. Was convinced they’d kept the classic 20 - 16mm.

Does look too small, especially with the thinner bracelet and baby version of the clasp. I suspect B&J would’ve loved it no matter what they did.

I wanted to love this watch but it would wear far too small for me. The 16mm taper on my 14060m often seems too small for me. Ah well!

That’s interesting to hear, I was looking for this to be in a potential 2 watch collection with my 126234 so feeling I may be in a similar boat. I think the 126234 is an excellent size.

Nice strap would be the solution for me.

Won’t even try to like the bracelet.

My daily beater is a 39mm Explorer and during the purchasing process the salesman showed me his 36mm one which he had worn for yonks. You could hardly notice the difference in the size, it was the 39mm's bling that set them apart.

  13. #13
Nice video. Hopefully will see this in person soon enough.

Should be more available than most SS models purely on size.

  14. #14
shots in that video show the older and new 36mm side by side, newer seems to wear noticeably smaller thanks to the 19mm lug width and tapered bracelet. a strange decision for them to make, given that 36mm is already on the smaller side by today's standards.

Nice watch, but the bracelet looks odd, at least in the video. I think the 20-16 looks more appropriate.

I think it looks great. For me, it is the best watch in the current Rolex lineup.

    Exp1 vs DJ 1601

It’s a shame as the head of the watch is perfect. I’ll see if it still bothers me after a few days otherwise I might give to one of my siblings.
Worth copying Jack's comments from a different thread here.

Great looking watch but bracelet taper seems a bit odd.

What am I missing about the bracelet? Isn't it the same size as the 114270?

A bit like the 39mm version I suspect it will look better in photos than on. The taper on the bracelet is extreme and will make it wear like a 34 because it’s not a true 36mm case.

I think for the first time, the 36mm OP is the watch to have over the explorer.

So what size is the bracelet then? The 114270 is 20mm-16mm.

I’m a huge fan of the 36mm. I really hope I can land one soon. Got in touch with my AD hours after it was announced. Will follow up my interest soon

It does look smaller than the original 36mm.

Also, it may have been just the lighting but in several shots, it looked like the dial was dented inwards around the central post?

I bought the 214270 39mm version last year which I love, although I understand the purists think it should always have remained 36mm.
I have been rather surprised by the sharp increase in advertised used prices since it was discontinued.
Maybe the fact that it only had a 5 year run might make it a future 'rarity' (as much as anything is a rarity considering the volumes made).

I have the MK1 version of the 39mm, the one that was pitchforked over the stubby hands. Low run and slow sales today equals a sought after classic in years to come.

I personally prefer the 39mm version, it's the perfect watch.

Why did they do that? The crazy world of Rolex. I’m sure it will sell in spades.

I think the AR coating used on the new one has the effect of making the dial case look tighter. In the opening mins of the video he explains the tenths of mm differences. Steve

When I saw the announcement I just assumed they would start remaking the 114270 with a new movement.

Thinning down the bracelet seems an odd move but who knows how those guys think ... will sell so who cares.

Having difficulty finding one in London, my local WoS branch are telling me that they haven't received any new releases but don't expect this new Explorer to be popular.

So is it 19mm the actual lug width, or the first link?

19 to 14 taper excluding end link and clasp?

As ever, looking at pics on a computer screen is pointless and about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Until you see the thing in the flesh you know now't.

I was surprised it's only a diddy 35.5 mm, yet is referred to as 36 mm. Looks alright if you've little wrists, bird boned.

19mm is lug width yes. Tapers to 14mm with a 16mm clasp.

    Maybe not that bad then.

Submariner goes from 21 to 16.5mm. With 18.5mm clasp.

I've been advised 2 years but that's converting my place on the list for a 214270. I suspect 36mm will feel small as the previous version did so I'll look out for a Mkii 214270 (even though I'm supposed to be reducing numbers ). I think 38mm would have been so much better.

    Ok :)

I have the arm and wrist for big watches, but 36mm always felt most ideal for me. New Explorer will be my next only watch!

Hard to beat a Sub ND.

The Explorer looks like a great watch but the bracelet taper is something I wouldn't be able to get over personally. Try one on before selling the Sub!

  42. #42
I doubt that screenshot in the third post, taken from the Bark & Jack video, portrays how the watch truly wears & looks on wrist.

In the video he confirms it’s a privately borrowed watch, not from a shop. The bracelet is not sized for him (you can clearly see from other shots he’s pinching the bracelet tight behind his wrist). Presumably having been lent a new, box-fresh watch by an individual, he doesn’t want to risk marking it by removing links etc. (or perhaps wasn’t permitted to). That means in the screenshot above, the loose bracelet is too big for him and thus protrudes out from both sides of his wrist when lain flat, thereby making the watch look much smaller. The watch he’s wearing unsupported on wrist at other times in the video, is almost certainly his own, older model.

The following screenshot shows what I mean - he’s holding the bracelet tight behind his wrist to make it fit properly, and it’s no coincidence that doing so makes the watch size look much better (well, to me anyway).

I’ve not seen one in real life sadly, but from what I’ve seen online I actually think I prefer the bracelet taper on the new ref. Definitely appear in the minority though.

I agree it looks tiny, not helped by the sharply tapering bracelet. I think Adrian from B&J has about 6.5” wrists, so he’s not a big guy either. The 39 was a good size for this watch.

I tried on the TT explorer today. Surprisingly heavy, and not as bad as I initially thought from the press pictures.

But having said that, it somehow feels smaller than the DJ36 which is a suprise.

    Rolex Explorer 36mm - Ref 124270

Could it be we’’’re just used to oversized enormous hulks of watches.
I was told the sea dweller had heft. That the DSSD was a monster. They now seem to be acceptable as normal watches. What once was a relatively standard watch size 40 / 50 years ago and worn by every one is derided and belittled now.
Maybe just maybe Rolex have aimed this to the modern lady ? One who likes men’s watches.
