Thread: Suggestions for a colleague. 50th birthday, £500 budget....

Suggestions for a colleague. 50th birthday, £500 budget....

I'm sure you get asked by friends or colleagues on a regular basis for watch tips what with you all being aficionados....

I'm awful at giving advice as I'm too swayed by my own preferences and vintage persuasions.

So a work colleague is looking to buy his father a watch for his 50th. £500 budget.

Not something he would wear everyday but something he would pop on occasionally.

He'd come up with the following

He liked this for it's limited edition billing... but felt the dial was a little busy (I agree!)
    https://www.johnlewis.com/citizen-at...MPSwXl8N-idZHc

and he liked the simplicity of this
    https://www.johnlewis.com/hamilton-h...b-7SprAzJ4odVw

So as you can see - too very different approaches!

I asked if he father wore anything currently but he codlin;t think of a particular style.

He wants to pick something himself which would be a nice 50th keepsake but would love some suggestions.

    Any thoughts in that budget?

Not sure on the Citizen, doesn't feel quite special enough.

Love the Hammy, that's a great option.

You can get a nice Tissot Seastar on Creation for under £400

Also some nice Certina autos within budget.

Potentially a little bit over-budget, but also pretty unique and ergonomic - Bulova Curv chronograph:

There's a few different finishes. Be worth phoning round UK Bulova dealers and seeing if you can get a deal.

As heís a child of the 70ís how about a Tissot PRX? Iím 48 and it appeals to me, my son also likes it and Iím actually considering buying him the Quartz version for his 16th. Might be nice if father and son both like it.

Quartz would be great for occasional wear and is under £300, the nice waffle dial auto is £565.

Tissot visodate heritage - quite a variety of dial/strap options. Iíve got the white dial on mesh bracelet. Automatic with a display case back - nice for a bday present. And the display box is also really nice for that sort of price range and comes with a couple of books on the heritage of the brand etc. The whole package makes for a good gift imo.

Although the Hamilton youíve posted probably hard to beat - looking around for a black dial watch at that price point myself and Hamilton looking the most likely.

    Great build quality.

    Insanely accurate.

    Great history behind it.

    Super cool.

    Will go with any attire.

    £100.00 below budget.

    I really like that Hamilton.

I think it's the best choice at that budget

The Hamilton is a nice watch, but no need to pay RRP on it. Regularly on sale. Keep an eye on HUKD.

prs-29a is a more attractive design than the hamilton to my eyes, and a limited run which he says he likes?

(dependent on when eddie re-opens the store of course!)

You're probably right but getting one might be an issue.

What has amazed me if the wide range of watches available at £500 from mainstream and microbrands. I like the Hamilton field mechanical and the scuba isnít too much more money. Bulova do the oceanographer and Baltic have some lovely vintage look divers.

Bulova has my vote too, either the Lunar Pilot or the A-15 reissue.

    Regards

shopped around and got a really good deal

fingers crossed his dad will love it - thanks again for all your input

    Hopefully so!

It wouldn't have been my choice, but it's not the worst Hamilton I've ever seen.

    A nice simple looking watch.
