    What's a GMT-Master "Rectangular Dial" ?

Had a google for the answer, but I am none the wiser:

To save clogging up his thread - can anyone explain what the "Rectangular dial" is, and how does it differ from previous dials?

The II in 'GMT Master II' is joined at top and bottom so it forms a rectangle. As opposed to II being the stick dial. So unofficially it's a mk3 dial.

I actually like the rectangle dials but really where the money is on these is where it has a 3186 cal movement. The 3185 is not rare, and neither is a rectangular dial with a 3185 movement. In fact Rolex had been putting rectangular dials in as service replacement dials.

So rectangular dial with 3186 is where the £££'s is, otherwise its fairly run of the mill. I struggled to sell one I had previously here, rectangular dial with 3185.

Sorry this was a rushed answer.

Edit: I'm assuming the one you linked is a 3186, at that price.

Don't forget the stick dial. Two straight lines with no serif on the tops or bottoms.

Not sure it adds £3k or so to the value of the watch, but each to his own.

You know as well as anyone, that tiny variations in Rolex dials can alter the value of the watch by thousands and in some cases, tens of thousands!

You are right Dave. I think the differences on fairly recent watches take time to go into Rolex folklore. Like the different coloured Red ceramic bezel on the BLRO and the coronet appearing between Swiss Made etc. Once the enthusiasts get hold of these details and publish Mark 1,2,3 tables etc these changes start to take on a life of their own and of course anyone selling including dealers will try to capitalise on the differences.

Floating dial, Blackout dial, straight seconds hand, APH, slimmer case, Long E, flat four. We could do a quiz, know your Rolex differences - name that watch.

Although in this instance, it’s the 3186 movement rather than the dial that makes the difference. Going forward though, it’s anyone’s guess as to which combination of 3185/3186 and stick/rectangle dial will be the more sought after.

The stick dial comes from 2006 and the rectangular from 2007 onwards

Part and parcel of Rolex collecting. Can’t be as ridiculous as the APH error dials on the 116520. There appears to be more error dials than normal dials, yet dealers are capitalising hard on these APH error dials. Go figure.

Not up your street I agree - you couldn't make your normal massive profit on it.

No idea how to close this thread, but it was a genuine query as to the description

It was not a conduit to comment on the seller or the value of his watch.

    I found this useful, https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=601546

I’m tempted to get the caseback off and see if it has the 3186 in it.

No, but no one takes any notice of him anyway!

Always wonder why these variations even exist. Poor QC, unplanned change in a template, tweaking a design, deliberate chenge to increase value of variants?

In the old days pre-internet when they were just watches, I imagine it was all about different suppliers and batches etc. I suspect that Rolex themselves are now wise to the perceived value of small tweaks - frankly it would be naive to think otherwise wouldn’t it?

I’d be wanting a 3185 in any GMT, I believe there was an issue with the 3186 jumping hour function.
