    Ploprof WOW

    Chaps

I have been drawn at times over the years to these wackiest of timepieces but had never managed to get my hands on one. Fast forward a few weeks ago, the opportunity popped up and a big box arrived at the office earlier this week.

I am fortunate to have some very nice vintage and newer watches in my collection but this watch has completely blow me away by its sheer quality and presence, it’s just amazing. The rubber and micro adjustment clasp straps the thing down and makes it wear incredible. The bezel movement and action is solid like nothing else I have experienced.

My weekly daily for many years has been a DSSD with a PAM312 for weekends so I am use to hunks and I am sure this Ploprof will see a great deal of wrist time.

Big thanks to James and others who assisted with the search, very much appreciated.

    Enjoy

    Very nice
I think one of these is the only ‘modern watch’ I would really like to try. They look fantastic, and as you say the quality is right up there with the best (in tool watches) I have tried them on a few times at ADs, just never bought one. The titanium version is so light it’s incredible.
    Enjoy!

Looks really good, you don't tend to see these on the forum let alone out and about - I don't think I've ever seen one out!

It’s because they are big, heavy and get whacked on doors a lot!

Congratulations on joining the owners club!

Very nice indeed. I’ve seen Steve (Shalakos) on the mesh and was really tempted to trade but I’m left handed and so wear my watch on my right hand and within a couple of minutes it was digging in to my wrist, so a no go for me unfortunately but I love the engineering. Enjoy

I've seen one out in the wild once. They don't appeal to me but it's nice to see something different.

That looks amazing on the rubber Pitch. I am the proud owner of Shalakos old one and Its an engineering masterpiece. Was never sur until I tried it on. It wears so much better than you would think. Congratulations on being in the Ploprof club!

Gratuitous pic of the most overbuilt watch I've ever owned. The omega build quality is as good as my Rolex all day long. Looking forward to diving with it when the weather gets better in Brighton

That’s a stunner and many thanks again buddy.

Many thanks for all the kind words, would love to add an orange rubber and roll on Pizza Matt.

Lovely pieces of engineering. I wore one up to the city when working there. It got a few comments fTom my work mates as they said it didn’t match my brogues - but I didn’t care! There are very comfortable considering the mass. The huge clasp counters the watch ahead very well.

as they say round here, “wear it in good health”.

    Got to love em!

My AD only has the white one and cannot (so he says) source the black, otherwise I'd definitely add one to the collection. They wear very well indeed for a big lump.

In the meantime, I'll have to be content with the 120M -

That looks so good, cool on the mesh, a real retro dive vibe. Hard to find these days I’d guess?

Saw these watches in dealers a few times they always looked massive and the polished steel just made them look way OTT.

Every post I see of someone wearing one they look fantastic! It’s almost like there are 2 different watches out there.

I suppose I have to ask.... I have big wrists and I’ve been drawn to very big watches in the past. I wore a PO XL for many years and got on with that. I’ve tried on a DSSD on many occasions and though it isn’t for me, the size was fine.

My wrists are about 8ins, which I think is fairly large. I love the sheer utility of the PloProf. It’s just a lump of exploration history and engineering and for that alone, I’ve always thought of it as magnificent.

I’ve seen one in the cabinet a few times but never tried one on. From what I can see, and this is just one man’s perspective, the size just seems unwieldy. The shape, again to my eye, looks like it would be quite awkward to wear for any period of time.

How have you found it to wear versus, for example, your DSSD?

  25. #25
it is sometimes too much to ask someone to put a steel plate on his wrist..

  26. #26
Congratulations mate on your new acquition.
I have often marvelled at the engineering behind it.
But like so many, have never considered one, due to its size and the fact that it would look crazy on my smaller wrist. LOL
Love it on the rubber strap.
By the way there are some cracking photos on the thread.
    Enjoy :-)

    Ploprof WOW

Id buy one in a heartbeat if they were comfy on the right wrist - I manage it with a gwf-1000 frogman (similar size, asymmetrical but nowhere near as heavy) but the case of the ploprof extends too far up the wrist in the wrong direction for me - have they ever made a ‘destro’ version for us lefties?

They (assuming my Helson isn't a million miles away from the real thing) wear smaller (although far from small) than you expect as there are no lugs, so the 12-6 measurement is short relative to the overall size.

Still a big watch, but they're rather cool I think.

I wouldn't spend the money on a real one, as it's too expensive for me for an occasional wear watch (or maybe at all, if I'm honest), but if I did, I'd get one in Titanium.

I'm not sure that the modern SS one makes a case for itself these days.

I do like wearing my Helson though, as (unlike the Steeldive) it's a replica of the early models and there's no way I'd dive in an original (although I've not yet dived the Helson, despite having it pressure tested after the issues many reported).

My wrists am not big and the Ploprof wears very well indeed, I didn't feel it was heavy or the mass huge, I would say similar maybe better than my DSSD.

I know not everyone gets on with the DSSD and it takes a few hours (wears) to adjust to sit correctly, something a few minutes in a shop will not address.

I know I keep banging on but the watch is a masterpiece

Many thanks again chaps for the kind words

I have always liked the look of the Ploprof...but the orange hand is unhelpful on a dive watch (orange goes grey underwater so you lose contrast), the bezel system looks hard to use with one gloved hand, and the He valve is mostly pointless but creates an additional vulnerable point for water intrusion into the case.

It seem like some of the over-engineering isn't actually helping that much.

  35. #35
All valid points but in reality it's a watch and as every Diver I know uses a computer and a console these days and nobody is going to be testing its limits so I have no issue whatsoever taking it diving.

Been to 30 this evening and it’s a joy, the orange did not turn grey, I love it. The reflection from the light under water is amazing and found the bezel fine one handed.

Absolutely you do. Orange is gone by 15m.

I took the pic below at 14m in full sun.

Any deeper and its all gone. Calls the whole orange is best for diving myth out (looking at you Doxa).

Pic with the camera flash on to put the colours back (cos the light isn't being filtered through 14m of water)

I should stress that my experience of this is limited to examples in ADs
They are fantastically light but every example I have tried has been covered in marks, which does not bode well for daily wear.

Doesn't bode well at all, especially not at £9,730.

I wonder what's deeper, the depth rating or the resale bath if you bought at RRP.

You could have said that about Daytona's once (well not the depth rating, but the resale hit), but look at them now.

Buying a watch at RRP to resell is a mug's game (unless you can find an in demand Rolex at RRP and sell straight away), but if you like the Ploprof, it might go the same way as the vintage ones in time.
