Thread: Car Youtube channels

  1. #1

    Car Youtube channels

After a break of several years I’ve renewed interest in nice cars and ended up on YouTube looking for inspiration and information. Is it a written requirement that to be a car YouTuber you must have a world class capacity to be irritating? Over the past few months I’ve discovered...

    - The posh grinning irritating one with a face a saint would never tire of punching.

    - The posh skinny Matt Lucas look and soundalike with a similar capacity for testing a holy mans aversion to violence.

    - The irritating fat Clarkson wannabe with all of the delivery and none of the talent

    - The irritating financed-to-the hilt one with the irritating model girlfriend and the brother whose capacity for irritation eclipses both

With the exception of Harry Metcalfe , who is excellent but isn’t really a YouTuber, they’re all awful....and irritating. Did I mention that? Two questions:

How have these people built up such huge followings?

Can anyone recommend any good ones?

Whilst I can't recommend one to watch, I can however recommend looking past Matt Watson and any of his nutty nonsensical reviews.
Oh.....and that silly laugh of his....swerving that too is a bonus !

Joe Achilles - Brit, nice clean reviews mostly BMW and Audi gear

Remove Before Race - as above does really good model history as an intro

Anna on Roads - fit bird who presents well, based in Switzerland

Nick Murray - Kiwi living in Connecticut, Porsche content, very laid back and witty

Doug DeMuro - bit of a nerd but really thorough reviews, USA

High Peak Autos - decent used car reviews, UK dealer

    In no particular order

    Metcalf

    Bad obsession motorsport

    Retropower

    Harris

At a pinch Smith and Fully Charged

  7. #7
Johnny Smith and Carfection (or anything with Henry Catchpole such as EVO COTY)

Quite like Cars With Luke, very nice swiss scenery and some interesting cars

    I'm guessing from the descriptions:
    Shmee
    Seenthroughglass
    ?
    TGE

Also best to avoid archie hamilton as he spends hours waffling before getting to the point (which often isn't worth getting to)

Supercarsoflondon is just as bad. MrJWW has his moments

As above, Doug DeMuro is worth a watch. He's a nerd and has a funny way about him, but once you learn to love that the content is good and a bit different to the norm.

Robert Llewellyn is excellent with his electric car channel.

PetrolPed is watchable, mostly, but a bit self-indulgent at times.

In terms of reviews I find CarWow with Mat Watson to be among the very best as they do seem honest and thorough. I also like some of the other general car interest and drag race videos they do.
So clever my foot fell off.

I always enjoy Jay Leno's Garage, he is supremely knowledgeable about the cars he presents and clearly loves his cars and driving them.

Believe it or not most are signed up to PR agencies like bloody reality TV 'stars'... cue promotional BS with every man and his dog to get content for the masses to lap up.

    e.g. https://www.mcsaatchimerlin.com/tale...-through-glass

In fairness, suppose I should say good luck to them.

Cleetus Mcfarland. - surprisingly likeable deep south yank, who puts 1600 hp through a corvette with no body panels. And now hovercraft. Jet boats etctect
Recently managed 6.4secs quarter mile, which is about 0.9secs 0-60mph!

Western Champlin. - another surprisingly likeable 'murican.
5.9 litre Diesel in a Mustang. In his garage. With no experience. Also rebuilt a Peterbilt truck, has 6x6x6 army vehicle.

The only thing I'd like about being an American is the car culture. They rock.

I'd watch Henry Catchpole review a toaster I think. I've definitely watched him review road bikes which I have little interest in.

Between the presenting style, film quality and content Carfection is easily my favourite (some of the other presenters less so)

He's currently doing a 3 part 'review' with the Mclaren F1, Porsche GT1 and Merc CLK GTR. How can you beat that?

More bad ones than good ones these days I reckon, but I still catch up with CarThrottle when I remember and Dennis Collins muscle-car rescue stuff.

I had a spell of watching Shmee but I'd rather fill my anus with wasps than listen to him now... every single video is "a day in my life with a mclaren" or "an update of my garage" or "buy my merch". Definitely spells his name with big "I".

  18. #18
This probably isn't the kind of car stuff you're interested in:

Some of the fabrication work in the skid factory is impressive.

Surprised no-one has mentioned goonzquad. Their red-neckery grates a bit but their enthusiasm and ability to give everything a try is good.

Number 27, his attempts to make his 408 influenzo die are notable.

Ratarossa, admittedly marque specific. But I like his approach to the snobby car brand.

Memphis, young Belgian guy tinkering with his old euro cars.

Schmee or however you spell it is so irritating, he gets access to great cars but I can't watch his smug face and horrible voice.

    My favourites.

    Vice Grip Garage

    Ratarossa

    Vice Grip Garage

    VinWiki

    Vice Grip Garage

Denis Collins trips out to rescue barn finds is pretty interesting and he knows his onions, but he's a acquired taste. He seems like a nicer bloke than when he's with Rich Rowlings from Gas Monkey.

Hoovies Garage ( although he is a bit annoying )

Tavarich ( His crazy crashed McLaren rebuild is quite the project )

M539 restorations - German old BMW resurrection specialist ( Great sense of humour )

    Vice Grip Garage

I find I can tolerate any of them as long as I'm interested in the car.

For example, Mighty Car Mods doing their Exige build was enjoyable along with plenty of their other series. However, I've not watched a single episode of them doing the RS3 as just looking at the car made me feel sleepy.

So search for cars rather than channels or people is my approach.

I can only share your sentiment OP. Three that buck the trend for me are

PetrolPed - a well-produced and edited 'real world' channel with none of the BS
EvilGT - this is a great channel, 2 northerners dicking around with cars with some northern humour thrown in
Savage geese - an excellent US channel, a good blend of technical and review. Their latest piece on the Nissan GTR is superb.

There are probably others but these three stand out for me.

3rd vote for Petrol Ped although it will be interesting now he is signed up with the Hendy car group if he will be negative in any of his reviews for their cars.

Bad Obsession Motorsport is the best.

    I also watch:

    Ratarossa
    Tavarish
    Wrench Every Day
    Hoovie’s Garage
    Car Wizard
    Doug DeMuro
Goonzquad (not sure I should admit to this one)

Many thanks for the continued suggestions. Already watched one or two including Evil GT. I know they say they know nothing about cars but they really know nothing about cars! Entertaining enough though.

One channel which isn't bad if you want an insight into higher end stuff is The Car Guys. Interestingly, they have a sister channel called The watch Guys. Basically it's one guy, who appears to have sold his business for millions, indulging his passion for fancy cars.

Really like Petrolicious, always filmed well and have great stories.

I particularly like the E30 M3 video as I have one and the owner sums up pretty well how I feel about my car..

I find myself watching mostly either Cletus McFarland try to blow stuff up, Carwow drag races or Donut media content. The latter have several 'channels' I guess you could call them, 'Money Pit' and one where they took identical Nissan 350z's and modified them both, one using cheap ebay parts, the other using whatever budget they wanted. Fun if you like your 'imports'. They also do some really nice dives into a car or manufacturer and the obligatory 'lists' I quite liked the 'fast truck' one where the Syclone (one of my 'lottery' cars) stayed at the top of the 0-60 charts until some barely qualifying as manufacturer Hennesy mad near 1000hp beasts came along.

I really like Henry Catchpole (I suspect he may be the 'posh grinning one' or did I read that was Shmee? Not someone I would call a car reviewer), but I find Harry Metcalfe's videos overlong and tedious in the main.

I really only watch Carfection ones, maybe the odd TG or Pistonheads.

I had a phase of watching Jay Leno's Garage, but I find him hard to take at the best of times and in the end I couldn't tolerate it anymore. I'd disagree with the assertion that he's knowledgeable - His questions come over like the chat show host he is - He's given a crib sheet 5 minutes before shooting and that's the extent of his knowledge. To balance that, a little, he does seem genuinely enthusiastic about cars.

I did enjoy a YT series I just watched, Sorted, where a load of Americans modified their cars to produce obscene amounts of power and then blow up - At the risk of a spoiler the answer was "buy something that's fast from the factory"...

    Car Youtube channels

    Channels I watch are

    Bad Obsession
    Engineering Explained
    Doug Demuro
    Carwow
    South Main Auto Repairs
    Hoovies Garage

I’ve tried watching Schmee but he just irritated me, used to also watch Rich Rebuilds but I think he’s lost the plot and stopped watching. I also sometimes watch DiagnoseDan, can get annoying but his in depth diagnosis I find very interesting.

And a car-search webste called CarTempest - apparently.

It has decent production values, and clealry a decent budget.

I have just enjoyed the "Buy a Ferrari for the price of a new Camry", and "Most Depreciating Supercar" challenge.

Looks like the channel has lots of interesting content - particularly for those who, like me, find 90's and 00's cars fun.
