fantastic...
In the past, I’ve posted here that I’m a big fan of reel mowers. Sadly I was unable to get what I want. Until this week...
I won an online auction on a Dutch auction site.
€150 for a 60s Locke 30” reel mower. With an 8 hp Honda engine. (What’s the risk? The engine itself is worth more than the whole deal!
This morning, I collected the machine. The address turned out to be the ‘lab’ of Barenburg’s grass seed company. The machine had been used and maintained until the start of this growth season. The company has switched to a robot mower, simply because the labour costs (man-hours mowing) are getting too high compared to the costs of a robot mower.
So... Here I have a ready-to-use well maintained golf course mowing machine!

Nice one Menno.
Should make mowing a pleasure.
Cheers,
Neil.
Nice, I am a big fan of good mowing machinery.
My dad has (for the last 50 years at least) used a lovely big Ransomes cylinder mower powered by a lovely JAP single, with the heaviest flywheel.
On tickover the engine is so relaxed you can say "suck squeeze bang blow" in time with the stroke of the engine.
He bought it from a Bowls club in the 60s, when they were "updating" their mower. The groundsman rang dad 5 years later asking to buy the Ransomes back, the "new" mower was nothing like as well made, and he wanted the old one back.

Great story.
The Locke originally has a Briggs and Stratton engine. But the previous owners thought that it was too loud for their professional uses. So they replaced it with an 8 hp Honda. I’ve just ‘serviced’ the Honda’s engine.
