It's now almost impossible to disassociate our flags from those who stole them from us, NF, BNP, Vote leave, Fromage and of course our very own high chancellor Bozo, flags at briefings, flags to be flown 365 from public buildings, pride replaced by nationalism - not the first time in history.

I think it's just that there is a bit of a discernible trend for the more dysfunctional, and insecure places to be big on the flag waving business, having a tendency to get more flaggy the weirder things become...See USA under Trumpy, Bunters expensive flag bedecked media room, the flags on buildings proliferation.

Just to be clear imo nowt wrong with a day once a year, especially if it involves a pint or several, just don't take it too far.

Celebrate yourself and those you care about twice a year and why not.
It’s common in most of Southern Europe where Catholicism or Orthodox Christianity are the main religions. In Greece you do not really celebrate your birthday but your Name Day (the day of the patron saint who you are named after) is a big celebration.

I'm happy to celebrate St. George's Day and the associated flag - nothing wrong with showing a bit of pride in and respect for your country...fair enough if you don't want to, but don't slag off those that do.

You can do what you like. You seem secure enough to make your own choices. Personally, I don't feel the need to wave a little flag to confirm what country I was born and/or live in.

I was responding directly to Rob's insinuation that not celebrating St George's was 'woke'. He appears to have a thing for 'woke', which suggests an insecurity.

I couldn't care less about St George's Day or the Queen. Fine to raise a glass to a saint if that's your thing, no harm in it, but not for me and certainly not for the Queen.

St Andrew’s day isn’t a big thing here
I think the SNP tried to make it a holiday but don’t think it was taken up
Burns night is more of a thing and I would say St Paddy’s day is bigger here too.
It’s all a bit contrived to be honest and I’d say St Paddy’s day is the only one I might acknowledge
I imagine those watching last night of the proms would be similar demographic to those getting out the bunting.

Not an insecurity at all, just an abhorrence for those wanting to take away anything to do with our history and call it racism, which seems trendy at the moment.

Nothing says that a house is occupied by an absolute bell end better than a flag pole in the front garden imho.

The only people on this thread who seem to be associating St Georges Day with racism are the people who think the rest of us are accusing them of racism.
IF you want to celebrate St George's day then do it, but there is no history of it being celebrated in England, I don't remember it being an event in the 70s or 80s etc it seems to be the virtue signalling victims who have a thing about it.

The Scots have Burns night, it would make more sense for the English to celebrate Shakespeare on April 23rd rather than a Roman Soldier of Greek/Palestinian descent who has no connection with England at all
