Disagree. Emotional intelligence is acknowledging the birthday and giving birthday wishes whilst having appreciation and empathy for the current situation. For goodness sake, he's wishing the Lady a happy birthday which is a lovely gesture. Do people really ignore someone's birthday if it happens to fall close to a death? What's the qualifying period?

Having just read some of the comments on this thread, I am appalled by some of the replies. What has / is this country coming to.
Seems people are arguing semantics.
The OP clearly intended to wish Liz well on her birthday, the standard term is happy birthday, I am not sure that had he said it to her directly she or anyone would take offence, even in her current circumstances. Its clear what the intention is

I like the Queen and I empathise with her over her loss. However, this thread is absolutely pointless - it's not like she'll read it.
What a bizarre thing to do on such an esoteric forum.
I can see similar well wishing on 'monarchs-r-us.forum.co.uk' maybe more acceptable.
