I don't think it will be a happy day for her, but I share your sentiments.

What’s inappropriate about wishing your monarch a happy birthday?

Nothing to do with her being the monarch, but wishing a "happy" birthday to someone who just buried her husband shows a certain lack of emotional intelligence.

Disagree. Emotional intelligence is acknowledging the birthday and giving birthday wishes whilst having appreciation and empathy for the current situation. For goodness sake, he's wishing the Lady a happy birthday which is a lovely gesture. Do people really ignore someone's birthday if it happens to fall close to a death? What's the qualifying period?

    Honestly people, get a life.

Sure mate, sure. Wish her a happy day and a long reign. Fill your boots.
I'll choose to doff my hat, personally, and send my best wishes.

Oh, and the answer to your first question is "yes". the answer to the second depends on you.

Having just read some of the comments on this thread, I am appalled by some of the replies. What has / is this country coming to.

Couldn't agree more and as usual it's the same ones who seem to be bringing their bear pit antics to the rest of the forum.

    Seems people are arguing semantics.
The OP clearly intended to wish Liz well on her birthday, the standard term is happy birthday, I am not sure that had he said it to her directly she or anyone would take offence, even in her current circumstances. Its clear what the intention is

I like the Queen and I empathise with her over her loss. However, this thread is absolutely pointless - it's not like she'll read it.

It's the same as when famous people die , we put RIP. It's what we do on here.

Exactly, there's more chance of Her Maj reading this than the subjects of RIP threads.

I might not ignore a relative/friend’s birthday but I would, for example, carefully choose a card that didn’t say *Happy Birthday*.

As already said though, completely pointless posting she’s not going to read it here.

Are you sure? She might want to know how to get on the list for a submariner...

What a bizarre thing to do on such an esoteric forum.

I can see similar well wishing on 'monarchs-r-us.forum.co.uk' maybe more acceptable.

I think its one of the joys of the forum, people here can discuss most things, some will agree some will not but you don't have to join the discussion or thread.

And just as you can discuss almost anything you can be sure someone will be along to split hairs!!!
