Jim Steinman Meat Loaf songwriter has died

I appreciate not everyone's cup of tea, but Bat out of Hell was a soundtrack to my youth.
    RIP.

That’s a shock, every one of his songs was instantly recognisable!

I’ll have to dig out a copy of Bad for good!

Not a fan of meatloaf but as a song writer had a knack for generating an image in ones head and telling a story in a song that was very tongue in cheek.
    I appreciate his work.

That’s a shame “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” always makes me smile when I hear it

RIP. Great albums, and I "sort of" enjoyed the musical "Bat out of hell".

Sad to hear that. I've never been a fan but my first girlfriend used to play Bat Out Of Hell over and over again when I was round at her place, so it certainly does have a powerful association with some very fond memories. Todd Rundgren plays some wicked guitar on that album. Produced it as well, as I recall.

Mine too. The first album I played on a Walkman was Bat out of Hell. JS also wrote Total Eclipse Of The Heart I believe.

That is genuinely sad. Bat Out Of Hell is, unashamedly, one of my favourite albums.

Not a fan myself, but there's no arguing that his stuff wasn't distinctive and that's no mean feat.

He wrote Rock And Roll Dreams Come True for Meat Loaf, but he didn’t like the song and didn’t put it on his album, so Jim sang it and it was a hit. Meat Loaf sang it on one of his albums later, but I think Jim did a better job with it.

He wrote “ Total eclipse of the heart” for Meatloaf and they fell out so he gave it to Bonnie Tyler, and ML says it’s the biggest regret of his career

He wrote “it’s all coming back to me now” for Celine Dion as well, which ML also does in concert.

Among other famous hits were Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out For A Hero, Barry Manilow's Read 'Em And Weep, Air Supply's Making Love Out Of Nothing at All and the Cher/Meat Loaf duet Dead Ringer For Love.

Without doubt a very talented songwriter

Read em and weep was seen first on Meat Loaf’s second album, Dead Ringer.

He has always been inextricably linked with Meat Loaf who, I believe, was an opera singer who was originally employed by Steinman’s production company to sing on Bat out of Hell due to an injury to Steinmans vocal chords.

I also read that the falling out was due to ML getting all the limelight when JS had done everything else but sing.

It could all be urban myths though!

    RIP Jim.
I've only seen his songs performed live twice. First time a Meatloaf tribute band at the Rock & Blues Custom Bike Show in Donnington, and my last precovid gig at Pembroke Castle when Ms.Tyler sang Total Eclipse. Both were superb, the songs translate even better live than on vinyl imo. Sorely missed.

I hadn't heard that Meat was an opera singer. I can certainly see it though! But he does sing on a Ted Nugent album released before Bat Out Of Hell.

Meat Loaf was also an actor prior to Bat Out Of Hell (1977).....1975 Rock Horror Picture Show, he played Eddie.

I don't think ML was ever a trained opera singer.

He may have had an operatic range at one time, but his well-documented throat problems suggest that he didn't know how to take care of his pipes. He was in numerous bands & musical theatre (Hair on Broadway, for example) before he recorded Bat Out Of Hell. He wasn't gigging at the Met (although he has sung with Pavarotti).

As am I. Seen them live around 5 times - and it is a great night!

2017 was perhaps their strongest line-up, and the "Try with a little help / Won't get fooled again" live finale is epic.
