    Throat problems

For last month or so ,my throat has been irritated ,I keep feeling the need to clear it and it gets a bit raw and itchy
It seems to come on worse in evening and night and is definitely getting worse ,my mouth also seems to get very dry at night ,Iam making sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day ,but it doesn't seem to make much difference it dries out quickly .I suffer from hayfever and thought it might be connected to this ,Iam taking antihistamines for it .
Does anybody have any ideas or advice on the situation ,thanks

If it’s going on for a month, then you should ring the Dr and get a FaceTime or a phone call at least just to rule a few things out.

I've had similar symptoms over the past few years plus others such as a feeling of obstruction and slight difficulty in breathing when laying on my back. My Doctor has put it down to heartburn (which I actually don't get very often) and a lot of small burps/pockets of air coming up from my stomach and prescribed Omeprazole, which I don't take that often, only it I think that it is a bit worse than usual.
A Nasal and ordinary Endoscopy has shown that there are no other problems so I just live with it although the wife was once told that if you do get a lot of heartburn then it could cause problems later in life. I don't think that my diet is too bad but could always be improved.
    Hope this helps.

It's tree pollen season. Obviously prolonged bouts of clearing the throat can irritate your throat more as well.

Do you live near blossoming trees, in the garden maybe?

It's still worth getting in touch with your GP for peace of mind but I personally don't worry as I suffer mildly every year, but get hay fever quite badly during the summer.

I ignored years of acid (heartburn) now on Omeprazole (4years) and endoscopy every 2 years for Barrett’s

Acid Reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) also know as silent reflux if you're not particularly getting any of the typical "heartburn" type symptoms. Fairly easily treated if you speak to your GP, usually with some kind of Proton Pump Inhibitor such as Omeprazole or Lanzoprazole in conjunction with Gaviscon Advance. Gaviscon Advance no longer needs a prescription and can be purchased over the counter which is good news, bad news is its a lot more expensive than a prescription now. It must be the Advance version though as this is the only one that combats and enzyme produced in the stomach called Pepsin which agrovates the throat and vocal chords.

It could be a simple post-nasal drip causing irritation, or hay fever or even reflux, as has been mentioned.

Worth getting it checked though - I had a similar problem for a number of years and my doctor eventually sent me to see a specialist to resolve my sinus issues. Within a week I was in hospital having a tumour removed from my larynx. Luckily, all was well, but it’s one of those things that’s worth having checked.

Is it on one side or both? If one side, check that you don’t have a tooth/ root canal infection. You can have one with no pain at all, and they can cause all manner of sinus and throat problems if untreated. I’m 18 months into recovering from mine.

Unlikely if both sides. Good luck.

I’ve had similar problems, I put it down to my asthma. If it carries on much longer I’ll have to see or talk to my doc.

My hayfever has been terrible today. Eyes fine, nose fine, throat terrible and quite hard to breathe at times. I'd call the Dr, could be that.

Speak to the Dr, but I too have had acid reflux and have been on Omeprazole, but I also suffer from hey fever. I find a tea spoon of local honey (local so it harbours local pollen) is the best medicine. Good luck.

I have one Lanzoprazole tablet daily & stopped acid reflux in its tracks, seems to be very common.

    No help to the OP.

Wileeeeeey, I’ve read your complaints about hay fever few times already. Have you tried all the antihistamines? I do suffer from hay fever a lot and had to go through quite a few different ones... you know sprays, tablets, sinus rinses... I find loratadine in tablets helps second year in a row now. Before that was another one starting with C... don’t remember exactly. All I’m saying is - try different ones one week at a time and hopefully you’ll find the one.
    Hay fever sucks.

Paw G appreciate your sentiment, as a hayfever sufferer of ........60 plus years now its a miserable condition, everyone is saying how nice the day is as you look through itchy eyes and a wet hanky!

I have favoured the , science moves on approach so I try the newest and latest remedies. I have consolidated on nasal sprays as I personally feel drowsy with tablets. I currently use Beconase, only when I feel sniffly or itchy. Two bottles (£3.75) probably do me a summer. Hope the OP resolves their condition, if not I hope a bit of Hayfever knowledge helps someone.

Beconase helps, but I’d need it every day. As it’s a steroid, I tend to use it for a few days so the antihistamines sort of build up and then I’m only at 1 tablet per day and all good. I take it in the evening so doesn’t really make a difference if I’m drowsy, but I know some people might feel different.

I was just referred to an immunologist by the Dr with my work health insurance but AXA declined the referral and told me "simple things like hayfever" can be done by the NHS GP and aren't covered so I'll speak to the GP the next time I have an appointment.

At the minute I'm on 3x180mg Fexofenadine daily but if things are truly bad I will take 4 which is the maximum dosage. I did have a course of steroids a few weeks ago and have an inhaler which I only use at night if it's bad (not asthmatic, only have one during summer). Towards the end of summer I'll have another course of steroids but I'll be relatively ok between then and now.

I've also been having a spoon of MartynJC's honey each day in hope! It's very nice on a toasted bagel!

Damn, that sounds like a serious hay fever. My sympathies.
Honey is supposed to help too, but apparently must be local? If it’s not, it can aggravate it.
Hopefully you’ll manage to get it under control, it fuc*ing sucks.

Cheers Pawel. It's cleared up a lot over the last week, I just get it really bad at the beginning and end of summer. Middle of summer is mostly ok which is a huge plus.
