I’m tired of normal cars...

... and fancy pootling around in something different. When I was in the US on holiday a couple of years ago, I drove around in my girlfriend’s dad’s Chevy Silverado and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was over fifty years old and looked battered and bruised but sounded glorious. On the cusp of turning 50, I’m seriously looking at similar trucks. It may be the onset of a mid-life crisis but hey-ho. Has anyone else gone down a similar road? An upshot would also be no longer worrying about the scrote that continues to add wabi-sabi to my V50.

As an occasional drive / toy, older trucks are good fun and usually easy to maintain if you can get parts.
If it’s to be used daily I would think twice. They are older tech and agricultural compared to modern motors.
For a while my only car was a Willys jeep. It gets more appreciative looks and people wanting to take pictures with it than any super car. It can be tough drive in traffic though and A roads / motorways are best avoided.
I think a lot of older trucks would be the same. - it’s similar tech.
I don’t think I would ever get rid of it though (unless I can get a bigger garage to fit a Dodge Command car)


Oh and they breakdown every now and again...

Surely a Land Rover Defender needs your consideration? Get one with a galv chassis and a decent bulkhead and it'll outlast you and keep it's value (as long as your fit some robust anti-theft hardware). Probably a late model 300 Tdi or early TD5 with a service history.

We had a Silverado as a hire car for a week or so when we were in Canada a couple of years ago.
It was pretty new and surprisingly comfortable and well equipped. Very wide though, especially when you’re on the ‘wrong’ side of the road!

This is a similar shape to the one I drove around in and I would love to have this as my daily. I take the points that many of the older trucks are agricultural compared to today’s cars but there was something delightful in basic motoring and an exhaust note that ranged from low grumble to howling snarl.

Getting these into the UK is a pain - last time I checked being a commercial they didn't qualify under the historic 20+ years old or whatever rules so attracted full VAT and duties.

My plan was a refreshed vintage from one of the US specialists - clearcoated patina body onto a new chassis with independent suspension, crate v8 engine/transmission from GM/Ford, etc. Problem is that would land up over £50k here...

At the risk of sounding boring and practical, how easy will a big US truck be to park in the UK’s every shrinking car park spaces? Plus fuel costs and road tax on a big petrol engine, I wouldn’t even consider it tbh?!?
